Synopsis :

It is 1930, two years after the death of the Dowager Countess, Lady Violet.

Some of the servants at Downton Abbey are carrying out their final duties and offering their last words of advice to their successors before retiring.

Lady Mary is enjoying her social engagements without her husband, Henry Talbot, when the rumours are confirmed and the doors are shut on her.

The Crawley family – the Earl and Countess of Grantham – then leave their London pied-à-terre to return to the tranquillity of their castle.

There, they will be visited by Harold, brother of Cora Crawley, the Countess, accompanied by a friend and adviser, Gus Sambrook.

The actor Guy Dexter, whom they met in London, will also be staying there with his partner Thomas Barrow, a former valet at Downton Abbey.

Decisions must be made regarding the future of the estate. Lady Mary is ready to take charge of the estate, but her father is finding it difficult to pass the torch on to her, as it is fraught with emotion.

L'acteur Guy Dexter, croisé à Londres, viendra également y séjourner avec son compagnon Thomas Barrow, ancien valet de Downton Abbey.

Des décisions s'imposent pour le futur du château. Lady Mary est prête à prendre la direction du château, mais son père éprouve quelques difficultés à lui transmettre ce flambeau, rempli d'émotions.

My opinion and a few facts /Mon avis et petites infos :

A discreet and moving tribute is paid to Lady Maggie Smith, who played the Dowager Countess of Grantham – enough to remind us of the great lady she was and to bring a few tears of respect to our eyes.

As the title suggests, this is the grand finale of the saga. The book draws to a close with this chapter, because things move on, people go their separate ways and make way for others.

I didn’t enjoy this final chapter of the saga quite as much. Perhaps because I missed the Dowager Countess and her unique personality.

Nevertheless, I’m glad I saw it.

Un hommage discret et émouvant est rendu à Lady Maggie Smith, qui interprétait la comtesse douairière de Grantham, de quoi se souvenir de la grande dame qu'elle était et de faire couler quelques larmes respectueuses.

Le titre le révèle, c'est le grand final de cette saga. Le livre se referme sur ce chapitre, parce que les choses évoluent, les personnes changent de chemin et laissent leur place.

J'ai moins apprécié ce dernier chapitre de la saga. Peut-être parce qu'il manquait la comtesse douairière et sa personnalité bien à elle.

Je suis néanmoins contente de l'avoir vu.
