Experiencing the first train metro system in Ho Chi Minh City

Hi everyone! How are you doing? I hope you're having a good day today—because guess what? Tomorrow is Saturday! That means it’s time for some weekend fun!

I’m really hoping for a better weekend myself, especially since this week hasn’t been the greatest for me. I’ve been on self-quarantine after catching a fever. But fingers crossed for a brighter and more relaxing weekend ahead.

Today, I want to share something that really surprised me during my recent trip to Vietnam. Did you know that Ho Chi Minh City now has its own metro system?

Honestly, I was quite shocked to see it—especially because the last time I visited (before the COVID-19 pandemic), there was no such system in place yet. It's amazing to see how much progress the city has made in terms of public transportation.

When my wife and I visited Bến Thành Market, I noticed a walkway leading underground—it brought us to the Bến Thành Metro Station. Out of curiosity, I went down to check it out, and then started searching online for more info.

I found out that Ho Chi Minh City now has one operational metro line: Line 1 (Bến Thành - Suối Tiên), which officially opened on December 22, 2024. The rest of the metro lines are still under construction, and there's no confirmed date yet for when they’ll begin operations.

I was actually expecting the terminal to be crowded—after all, Ho Chi Minh City is known for being packed with people. But surprisingly, not many people were using the metro facilities. I guess it’s still quite new to the locals, and from what I observed, most of the users were younger people. I believe many locals still prefer traveling by road, which might feel more convenient and familiar for getting around the city.

Look how empty this place is—it really surprised me! Maybe it was because I didn’t come during peak hours. If that’s the case, I guess I was lucky to enjoy a quieter moment here.

Just look at the whole system map , i guess only 5% of the train system are operating at that time .

First let's get the ticket at the kaunter because the ticket vending machine still not operate at that time.

Opss , sorry i have tekan your photo uncle. Smile !!

This was the ticket , where we need to scan the qr code at the entrance .

Let's join the que with the local , ermm and some tourist .

We decided to hop on the metro and head to the next station—L2 Nha Hat Thanh Pho, which is located near the iconic Opera House. Although the distance between stations is short and could easily be covered on foot in just a few minutes, we wanted the experience of riding Ho Chi Minh City’s new metro system.

The best part? The ticket cost only 7,000 VND, which is roughly $0.27—a small price for a memorable little adventure!

The next train come around 8 minutes after we got in the platform.

Look at this place ! I love it , it was so clean .

Even when the train arrived, I noticed a janitor quickly stepped in to clean the inside of the carriage. It all happened so fast that I didn’t manage to capture a photo of it—but it was impressive to see how they maintained cleanliness, even during operation.

This is how it look inside the train.

Its take a few minutes to reach the next station .

Yep, it was a short adventure—but definitely worth it! Now that I’ve experienced the metro system in Ho Chi Minh City, I can add it to my future itinerary. It opens up a convenient way to explore even more places the next time I visit.

I guess that’s all for today’s little journey. Hopefully, this post gives you some helpful insight if you ever plan to visit this vibrant city in the future.

Thanks so much for stopping by—your time means a lot! See you again in another post. Until then, take care and cheers!
