Cutting Thirteen Inches of Hair to Bring Smiles to Children With Cancer

Growing my hair was personal, but cutting it was purposeful. Here’s how 13 inches of hair made a difference!

Who wouldn’t want long, shiny, black hair? Well, I guess every single lady.
I was one of these ladies way back then. I have always loved my long hair until I found out why I have been loving it.

It was during the pandemic when all our movements were limited. Travel restrictions prevent you from making your usual enjoyable trips quickly. Also, going to the grocery store or even the salon is a hassle. During this time, I found my crowning glory’s purpose.

I was scrolling Facebook when I found out about this non-government organization named Project Catch. They aim to gather 13 inches of hair and make them into wigs for kids with cancer. They hold collections twice a year.

Hearing this, I know instantly why I need not cut my hair. I found its purpose.
My first hair donation took place way back in 2022. As I’ve said, it’s pandemic time, and I must patiently wait for Tuesday or Thursday since these are the only days we can go out based on our community permits.

On a Thursday morning, I readied myself to donate my most prized possession. I brought hair ties and a tape measure to ensure I have the right length to give.
When I entered the salon, a staff member greeted me with a smile. When they let me sit on their styling chair, I immediately gave my instructions, which were to cut 13 inches off my hair. They were delighted with what I said and offered me a deal in exchange for their cash and services. According to them, they wanted to take it so they’d have material to use for eyelash extensions. Of course, I politely declined.

I explained that I needed them to seal it right away in the Ziploc bag I gave since I would take them to the organization’s drop-off area after my appointment was done with them.

Finding significance in the things we cherish most is ultimately what truly matters. My long hair played a significant role in shaping my identity for years, until the pandemic drastically altered my circumstances. Through Project Catch, I learned that something as rare as hair itself could bring a lot of comfort and confidence to children battling cancer.

That first donation in 2022 was more than a haircut. It was a gift of hope for these kids with cancer. It was a gift of hope for me—trying to make a difference in the lives of these little brave souls. This experience reminded me that even the smallest acts of kindness create ripples in the world. So inspired by this experience, I decided to let my hair grow out again; two years later, in 2024, I made my second donation and I am currently growing my hair for next year’s donation as well.

Who knows? Someone else may hear my story and do the same. Because kindness, as small as it may seem, never fails to reach the hands that need it the most.
