Weekend Gardening

Like on past Saturdays, I used this weekend’s break to do some gardening. There’s always so much to do, and sometimes I feel lazy because of the workload, haha. But today, I managed to discipline myself and get things done. Gardening is rewarding for my family since it fills our table, so I’m motivated to keep planting, cleaning up, and especially harvesting.

Before noon today, I cleaned the pesticide sprayer I hadn’t used in a while. Thankfully, it’s still in good shape. The sprayer isn’t too big, holding only 16 liters of water. So, my first task today was spraying weeds and hoping they’d die, especially since it rained heavily in the afternoon, which made me wonder if the spray had enough time to work. All I can do now is hope it was effective.

At noon, I took a break. The weather was so hot that I decided to head back home, take a shower, eat, and then nap as the rain came down. In the evening, around 4 p.m., once the rain stopped, I went to our pineapple plot. We planted the pineapples quite close together, which makes it a challenge to clear weeds in between them. We laid plastic sheets to prevent weeds, but some have hole, probably from the dog, and weeds are growing through them. Today, I managed to clear just few rows. We’ve planted around 300 pineapples, with many new seedlings waiting to be planted.

While I was weeding, it rained again, but I kept going since it was getting late. After the rain stopped, I asked my wife to bring me dry clothes because it was chilly. As it got dark, I wrapped up the weeding, though I didn’t finish. This is the usual weekend routine in the garden. During weekdays, I rarely get to work in the garden, if I manage to go three times a week, it’s quite an achievement.

My wife picked a jackfruit today. It’s delicious in soup with chicken or pork. She also picked some papayas just starting to turn yellow to avoid pests that usually spoil them if we wait until they’re fully ripe.

That’s today’s gardening update. Despite the heavy rain at 2 p.m. slowing things down, I’m grateful for the progress we made in our garden.

You make an effort to attend on your garden, you'll surely get a good harvest later. That's what amazing when you are gardening, your effort will always have a return, whethee in crops or it can just make you feel better doing it.
