Planting Sweet Potatoes in a Sack

Happy Sunday Hivers!

With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the prices of goods have increased. If this situation continues for months or even years, many people especially those in struggling countries may face severe hunger. In times like these, having a resourceful mindset is essential in order to survive.

Since the prices of basic needs have already increased, we can also expect the price of rice to rise significantly. It cannot be denied that the Philippines has a very high consumption of rice. We are used to having rice from breakfast to dinner, it has become like the main fuel for our bodies. For most of us, going even a single day without rice can make us feel weak.

However, we also have alternatives in case rice is not available, we turn to root crops. If we really can’t afford to buy rice, we rely on root crops instead. That’s why, this time, we decided to start planting root crops again. While the newly purchased land is still being cleaned, we planted sweet potatoes at home using sack.

In fact, this is our first time planting sweet potatoes in sack. We saw a post on Facebook where sweet potatoes was grown in sacks and produced a good harvest. So we decided to try it ourselves and see if the results would be just as good.

Two weeks ago, I planted sweet potato stems in sack, and this is how they look now. They grew very fast. I’m thankful that all the cuttings I planted survived. The soil we used is good, and aside from that, their placement is ideal, they are exposed to sunlight but also get some shade. They are not exposed to direct sunlight the whole day.

It didn’t go through a wilting stage before thriving, it grew continuously from the start. I’m really happy because in just a few weeks, its leaves have already started to become lush and abundant. Did you know that sweet potato leaves are also edible? We usually pick the leaves and steam them and adding calamansi, vinegar, soy sauce, ginger, onions, and tomatoes, and that becomes our dish. In fact, sweet potato leaves are rich in iron, which is why we serve them steamed to anyone in our family who is anemic.

They say it takes about 4 to 5 months for sweet potatoes to fully develop, and I’m really looking forward to that day. For now, I enjoy my mornings watering them. This is why I love planting because every morning, I feel excited to check on my plants, see if they are doing well, and observe their progress.

In the end, planting teaches patience and care. Even small growth brings happiness, and it reminds me that good things take time.
