Dinangdang: A Traditional Snack from the Visayas

Happy Sunday Hivers!

Dangdang Q, or Saging Dinangdang, is a traditional way of cooking bananas in the Visayas. The word “dangdang” is a Visayan term that means placing something over hot charcoal to cook. In simple terms, dinangdang na saging is grilled banana, a popular native snack enjoyed by many in the region.

I remember back during my elementary days, many vendors used to sell this snack at our school. In fact, this was one of the snacks I often bought when I was still studying.

The banana used for this is not overly ripe, just the right level of ripeness. It is then grilled over hot charcoal. After grilling, it is spread with margarine and sprinkled with white sugar. This was truly one of our most delicious snacks back then.

Since I was in college until I started working, I rarely got to see dinangdang anymore. Of course, when something is your favorite, you really end up missing it.

I’ve always loved its taste. Most of the banana snacks I usually see being sold in Cebu are banana cue, where the banana is cooked in oil, not grilled. Nowadays, it’s quite rare to find vendors selling dinangdang.

When I went to Ormoc, I was really happy to see a dinangdang vendor near the bus terminal. Of course, I didn’t go home without buying some. I had not eaten this for a long time, so I was really excited.

I ate it while riding the bus since I wanted to catch an earlier trip and arrive home early. While eating, I couldn’t help but smile because it reminded me of my childhood days, when my classmates and I would rush to the canteen just to buy dinangdang.

It was a simple moment, but it brought back so many good memories. Sometimes, the taste of old snacks like dinangdang brings us back to the happiest days of our childhood.
