Checking Our Garden After the Heavy Rain

Happy Monday Hivers!

Recently, the weather in our area has been pretty good. The news said that by October this year, we might experience extreme heat or severe flooding. We’re really thankful to God that the weather has still been quite pleasant so far. It rains, then the sun comes out again, so there’s a good balance between rainy and sunny days. I just hope it continues to stay this way.

Last night, we had very heavy rain in our area. Thankfully, it didn’t reach the point of flooding, but you still can’t help but worry about the vegetable plants in the garden. When the rain is that heavy, the raindrops are quite large and can make the plants droop or even damage them.

So, when I woke up this morning, my mom and I went straight to the garden to check on everything. Unfortunately, what we were worried about had actually happened, the plants had been affected by the heavy rain.

Some of the pak choi plants were drooping because they couldn’t withstand the heavy rain. So far, pak choi was the only vegetable that was affected, and thankfully, there weren’t too many plants that went down. The sweet potato tops also looked wilted at first, but they eventually recovered once the sun came out and the weather warmed up.

However, the eggplant and long pepper plants, along with their fruits, still looked very fresh and healthy. I especially loved seeing the raindrops resting on the eggplants and long peppers. That’s one of the things I love about the garden after the rain, the plants look so fresh and vibrant. Of course, there are also some plants that are more delicate and tend to droop easily when the rain gets too heavy.

One downside of the rain is that the weeds grow so quickly. Remember the eggplant seedlings we recently transplanted? The weeds are already growing alongside them and competing for space.

So, one of the things I worked on in the garden this morning was clearing the weeds around the newly transplanted eggplants. I also hilled up the soil around the plants while my mom was busy clearing and removing the weeds in another part of the garden.

Gardening is really a never-ending job, especially when the weather keeps changing. After the rain, there are always things to check, plants to care for, and weeds to remove. But seeing the plants recover and grow again makes all the work worth it. Hopefully, the weather stays good and our little garden continues to grow well.

Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
