Camote: One of the Crops Commonly Eaten by Filipinos

Happy Thursday Hivers!

In the Philippines, no matter how poor a person may be, people can still find something to eat especially if they live in mountainous areas and are willing to work hard. In the mountains, it is very rare for anyone to go hungry, regardless of their financial situation.

Most mountainous areas in the Philippines are very suitable for growing crops. Many of these crops are easy to plant and require very little expense. One good example is sweet potato, which we locally call camote. It grows well in the mountains and can provide a reliable source of food for families, even for those who have very little money.

I remember when I was young, whenever we visited our relatives, they would always send us home with camote (sweet potatoes). Life in the province is not difficult as long as you are hardworking. Camote can even replace rice, if there is no rice, it is still okay as long as there is camote.

Sometimes this is what my mother and I eat when we don’t feel like eating rice, and sometimes we also have it as our afternoon snack.

Last week, my mother bought camote (sweet potatoes) from the market. One of my favorites is the orange-colored variety. Actually, there are many kinds of camote with different colors, some are yellow, white, and purple but the one I like the most is the orange one. I’ve noticed that orange camote is usually sweeter compared to the others. And yes, the camote my mother bought was orange and very sweet.

Camote is also very easy to cook. You just need to put it in a cooking pot with water and let it boil until it becomes soft. Once it becomes soft, that means it is already cooked. However, you need to clean it well first because it often has a lot of mud on it.

Even if this were my only meal, I would already be satisfied because it can make you full even without any side dish. Camote is one of the crops that many Filipinos eat, and it is sometimes even paired with lechon.
