Happy Thursday Hivers!
Ever since my siblings and I were children, our mother would often take us to our uncle's place. We always looked forward to those visits because there was a river nearby where we could play and have fun. The area was surrounded by many coconut trees, and our uncle would often treat us to fresh young coconuts. They also had a vast rice field, which fascinated us as kids.

Back then, farming was our uncle's primary source of income. He focused mainly on rice farming and rarely had to worry about their household's rice supply because they always had plenty in stock. However, things have changed over the years.

As my uncle grew older, he gradually lost interest in rice farming and shifted his focus to growing vegetables. According to him, rice farming has its advantages because it provides a steady supply of rice for the family's daily consumption. However, it is also very labor-intensive and usually offers only one harvest per cropping season.

Vegetable farming, on the other hand, is less physically demanding and can provide a more continuous source of income. He explained that once you harvest certain vegetables, you can continue harvesting from the same plant multiple times. Eggplants, for example, do not produce just one harvest. A single eggplant plant can bear fruits repeatedly over time, allowing farmers to harvest many times from the same plant. Because of this, vegetable farming can generate higher returns while requiring less effort compared to rice farming.

During my visit to my uncle's place, I headed straight to his vegetable garden. I was truly amazed by how large it had become. This is actually one of the reasons why he sometimes misses family gatherings and special occasions, he is simply too busy taking care of his crops. Since his farm is not yet equipped with modern irrigation systems, watering the plants has to be done regularly, which can be very time-consuming. Fortunately, his children help him manage the garden, making the workload a little lighter.

What makes this even more interesting is that this area used to be a rice field. Over the years, my uncle transformed it into a thriving vegetable garden. He now grows a wide variety of vegetables, and the garden is filled with healthy and productive crops. One thing I admire about him is that he has already established a loyal customer base. He no longer needs to bring his produce to the market and spend time displaying and selling it there. Instead, his regular buyers come directly to his house to purchase fresh vegetables.

Seeing his garden in person inspired me even more to improve my own farming efforts. It reminded me of how rewarding farming can be. Although it requires hard work, patience, and dedication, the potential rewards can be substantial, especially when the harvest is abundant. Watching my uncle's success made me realize that farming is not only a source of income but also a fulfilling way of life.

As I left his farm that day, I carried home more than just memories and photographs. I also brought with me valuable lessons about perseverance, hard work, and the importance of caring for what you plant. My uncle's journey has shown me that success in farming does not happen overnight, it is the result of consistent effort and passion. His vegetable garden continues to inspire me, and I hope that one day my own garden will flourish just as beautifully as his.
