🫓 Parathas & Other Totally Unrelated Events Of The Day 🔖

Today's post consists of several unrelated photos of the day, but I will do my best to make it a cohesive read for you all.

Drain The Swamp 🚱

uf.png

My country's former orange president, the one and only Trump always liked to say "Drain the swamp!," so that's exactly what I did today. The former owner of our place built a small fish pond on the side of the house, but by the time we had moved it was full of broken phones, trash, aquatic plants, rats, and a resident water snake. I've never been keen on having this thing so close to the house for many reasons.

This mini swamp has claimed my leg, two pre-teens, and a mother has even dropped her baby into this non-feature. I managed to cut the plastic sheets enough to slide them out, and after noticing the water wasn't draining quickly, I broke up some of the concrete and let it flow. While raking out some of the plants, I noticed an area full of light brown water, and when I moved the roots in that area, a snake slithered away and it smelled like sewage. I can only assume the snake had a personal toilet contained by a root room, the best bit of engineering in this whole project.

Hello & Good Night 💤

The parathas haven't come into existence yet, but since the only evidence of them was the thumbnail, I won't share the same image twice. Pre-paratha o'clock, realizing I barely documented the swamp draining project and needed some photos for Hive, I peered into the girls' bedroom and found Srey-Yuu doing homework and Nim passed out on the bed. Her curfew is 5pm, so we woke her up in the evening, guess she just needed a nap away from home.

Monkey Reader 🔖

wer.png

Monkey-B has read her softcover Harry Potter book more times than I can count, mostly because English books for kids of popular western titles are very hard to find, and reading isn't really part of the Khmer cultural interests. It was at this point she looked at me and said "I'm hungry," then I knew I'd be cooking and delaying several hours of work, so I made parathas and green tomato chutney in a rush, took the one and only photo of it and it became the thumbnail. It's now 2:04am, got to get to bed and wake up at 5:20am to do the tuk-tuk school routine all over again. I may try and sleep in the tuk-tuk tomorrow morning after I drop the kids off, it all depends on the weather.

Halo morning Justin.. so did u sleep in the tuk tuk? Busy routine.. wow.. Monkey B read Harry Potter so many times... It's a really good book. Hahaha.. I did not realize that Trump said that.. but at least it is better than the invincible handshake. Hehhehe

I can kind of sleep in the tuk-tuk, but it's too uncomfortable and hot to really get into a deep sleep. The back seat is also a bit narrow, so one shoulder hangs over the edge when I lay down, but I can close my eyes and get into a restful state while listening to a podcast.

I remember when Trump was running for President, one of his slogans was "Drain the swamp!," meaning he'd get to Washington and get rid of all the waste and corruption, haha, but he forgot to look in the mirror first 😆. Monkey-B has learned so much new vocab from the Harry Potter books, and I think she is at a literacy level similar to a native-English speaking child her age.

Dude, I expected more photos of Parathas haha.. well, try the cheese paratha sometime and Monkey-B really so focused on reading it.. make sense when the book is Harry Potter.

Though, paratha with chutney is a Nice combo... Also try Potatoes Paratha with the chutney! Kind of my favorite Meal.

The paratha photos were kind of an afterthought, but I should actually make a proper recipe some day. On this day I only had some flour and green tomatoes, so there was very little we could make, but green tomato chutney and plain parathas were a nice snack.

I love stuffed parathas probably aloo paratha is the one we make most often but potatoes aren't very common in our area. Thanks for stopping by.

Sounds like a busy but meaningful day. Not everyone get to clear the swamp. I can see a small sunflower farm at the newly established yard by the house, not suggesting but that's what in my mind currently

Hmmm.....the creative wheels are turning on how to use this space. It's definitely the least scenic space, in between the old government road and the edge of our house, visible from the highway with no river view. I've thought about a small herb garden like you mentioned, perhaps a tuk-tuk parking garage, or even put a bed frame there and make a small fire pit, then I could sneak out at night and lay by the fire for a little while.

I am curious about that Paratha. Wow! It's good that she is reading the Harry Potter book. To be honest reading can make a child wiser, so it's a good thing.

The parathas are a nice alternative rice, but most meals we eat with rice because it's cheaper. They are technically my stepdaughters, but I've been with my youngest since she was 2, and now I think she reads at the same level as a native English speaker her age.

Oh it's my first time to hear about Paratha. Same here in my country, we are an avid eater of rice due to its availability.

Just reading about the measly amount of sleep you get, makes me tired. Hope you manage to change this around. Take care of yourself, my friend.

I hope better days are on the horizon, at least more restful ones. Tomorrow is the last day I take the kids back and forth to school in the tuk-tuk, and that six hours each day not spent in something smaller than a prison cell will be highly valued by me.

Wow. That sounds like a huge (life)change(r). I'm sure you will enjoy this sudden improvement.

Big hug!

P.S. One way or another, I forgot to reply to your comment about a possible move to Portugal. Now that would be interesting. If that's indeed the case make sure to reach out to me.

Big friendly raptor hug!

it was a very narrow day, and I was happy to see there was a garden, and the children playing and studying while taking a break.

It's good to mix the right amount of work and play, and I would say we had the right formula on this day.
