We are still in Phnom Penh on our week-long road trip, and this day was spent eating at our favorite Thai restaurant and searching for a new stove.
I've been coming to this restaurant at the Phnom Penh riverside for nearly 12 years, and I think it has gone through three different changes in ownership during that timespan. Luckily the quality of the food has not gone extremely downhill with each new owner, but I must admit the original owners maintained the best quality.
Each of us always get the same dish, a Pad Thai for Srey-Yuu and Monkey-B, a green curry for the missus, and for me, larb tofu. This place is able to veganize dishes for us and still keep things tasty. That may sound simple, but on numerous occasions I've received raw chopped veggies served on cold leftover rice here when I ask for a veggie fried rice without egg.
Cambodian food isn't typically made with a lot of herbs and spices, so when you remove the meat, fish, or eggs from dishes, you have basically taken away the main flavor, so that's why I think Thai cuisine is better suited for my tastebuds.
While moving from place to place, we passed by Freedom Park, and geez, that was a sad site. This place used to host some of Cambodia's only major pre-pandemic protests against government co**uption, and I was actually in Phnom Penh during elections many years ago when low-rise razorwire barriers were put up to prevent people from entering the park. I guess those barriers were replaced with 5-meter solid panels, bye-bye freedom.
The park has a small cross-section removed for traffic to cut through it, but for some reason the other half of the park was left unchanged, and strangely enough it's the half of the park that was never really the focus site of any protests that angered the government.
We were attempting to drive to a stove shop that I found online and routed some directions to, but when we arrived we realized the information was incorrect, but luckily there was a temporary blowout sale located nearby in a vacant business parking lot. There were a few stoves there, the prices were good, so we grabbed an electric kettle and new double burner stove.
Most items were Thai imports, new old stock that didn't sell previously, and we noticed some items were from as far back as 2019, but all of still brand new and unsold. The shopping was kind of rushed, so I'll be sure to share our awesome new budget stove when we get back home to Steung Kach.
One of our last stops of the day was an appliance shop to get an electric on-demand hot water shower unit for our cabin. We technically don't have running water, but the cabin on our property has a tank on a tower, and there is gravity fed water flowing to a showerhead in the the bathroom, but for now that's all it's connected to. Even though the water pressure is weak, the water heater will be able to function and provide us hot showers.
While walking around the store I noticed a two burner high-pressure stove on legs, and I was reminded how much I'd like to have a high-flow gas stove for making fried rice and other things that require some serious flames to be done right. Well, some things have to be left for the future, our funds are running low. That's all for now friends, getting late here, gotta get some rest and get ready for a very long drive back home.
Yes it looks like a good choice my brother Thai restaurant. I personally like some Thai food menus, like tomyam for example because it suits my tongue and the taste is also very good.
This holiday for you and your family, I see you and your wife do a lot of shopping for household needs. It's great to see your togetherness and happiness and everyone looks happy. Indeed, holidays are very exciting, especially when accompanied by shopping for all the needs of the family and also the children hehehe 😄
Thank you for stopping by. We are back home home now, glad to be on the mountain again, but it was nice to experience city life for a week. We did eat a lot of good foods, but it was very expensive for us, so now it's back to the simple life, full of cooking and working. The Cambodian school year begins tomorrow, so we are now gearing up for that.
That is awesome! You took care of a lot of business on that trip. What a huge challenge to get things up there, isn't it. Someday when it turns into the main thoroughfare, you will remember how difficult it was. For now, it is a task, but, you seem to wade well through it all.
Do you have most things you need right now?
Well, the main part of the trip was to get some braces for Pov because she's got a misaligned jaw and some tooth crowding. It is possible to buy things online via FB, but the sellers don't have websites, so you kind of have to know/guess what they have in stock, and it's not convenient when you're buying things you've never purchased before. I'm most proud of my pressure washer, the tuk-tuk is a little rusty and long overdue for some tlc. I'd say we're kitted out for a few months now, the new school year starts tomorrow, so that's topic of conversation tonight.
That's great! How many of us can say we are set for a few months? (actually, I can, I have been practicing my skills on not relying on utilities or groceries for months at a time) It is not as easy as it seems and yet, when you put your mind to it, you can do it, even if you do without some things.
To be fair, You and your family are amazing and very inventive in figuring out how to make things work for you. It is a gene I lack, but, I found that I can learn. :)
Thanks so much, Justin. I bow down to your can-do attitude!
Happy New Year!

I'm glad you found a good deal on your new stove :)
Is there any way you can get most of the air out of the tank? That would really help with the water pressure!
I hope you guys had a very merry Christmas 🎄

The new stove is such a nice addition, especially cooking without fears one of the rusty holes will suddenly enlarge and turn into a flamethrower. The cabin with the tank above the house has enough gravity pressure for a decent shower, toilet flushing, and hand washing, but at the moment the pipes are too small in diameter, so I am hoping a diameter increase will aid with faster water flow.
Eventually the dream is to have a huge tank mounted high on the proper and pressurized with an automated pump, dispensing pressurized water to all of the future bungalows. Give thanks for being awesome, wish you a prosperous 2023.
I have faith that you will have that in the future :) Until then, you will work with what you have 🙌
May you have a wonderful new year as well, which gets better day by day 🎆
