Last week, we had a special trip brought back many memories and stories from the past. We went to the birthplace of my mother in Midsayap, North Cotabato. The reason for our visit was to see the resting place of my both grandparents. Both of them were buried on their own land, making it very meaningful place for the whole family.
My mother has nine brothers, and she is the only daughter among ten siblings. Out of all them, she is the one who inherited the land where her parents were buried. It is both a blessing and a responsibility for her. Until now, my mother is still undecided if she will sell the land or keep it. The main reason is that she cannot farm there since it is far from our home. One of my cousins, who is the daughter of my mother’s brother, is very interested in buying it.
For my mother, the sentimental value is very strong. It is the land of her childhood and the final resting place of her parents. But when she thinks in a practical way, it also makes sense to sell it, especially since the buyer is still a family member. If she sells, she can use the money to buy another piece of land closer to where we live or for anything else she needs. But as of now, she has not yet made a decision.
The are is very beautiful and refreshing. It is surrounded by tall coconut trees, and many fruit bearing trees grow there too, such as guyabano, lansones, durian, mangosteen and bananas. It feels like a hidden farm full of blessings from nature. Being there, I could feel peace and calmness all around.
We did not go alone on this trip. I was with my siblings, nephews, my husband and my child. Reaching the place was not so easy because it is far from the main road. We had to walk for about twenty minutes to get there. Going down the path was easier, buy going back was very challenging. The road was sleep and uphill, so we had to stop many times to catch our breath. Even though it was tiring, it was also fun because we were together as a family, sharing jokes and stories along the way.
This trip to my mother’s place was more than just a simple visit. It was a reminder of our roots, our family history and the value of the land that connects generations. Whether my mother decides to sell or keep it, the memories and stores will always remain.
This is my own picture from the visit, edited in Canva, so I can share it with you.
