October 10th ➡️ October 17th, 2022I think it's safe to say the majority of ASEAN Hivers were born in the 1980s, an era when hairspray became cheap and globally available, allowing for gravity-defying hairstyles. Almost everyone in the background of my childhood photos has an extreme hairstyle, and there are so many other things that make me laugh as well. I can remember my first cassette tape player and the joy it brought, a world away from the smartphones kids of today have access to, with the world's bank of information a few clicks away.
I want to see some of your favorite childhood photos for this challenge, and perhaps you can tell me a bit about the images like where you were, what you were doing, who you were with, etc. I live in Cambodia now, and all of my childhood photos are still in the USA, but I'm sure I can convince my mom to scan a few images and send them to me, but finding time to make a post is a challenge in itself because life has been very hectic lately.
My wife grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand, and because of this she has no images of herself until she was about 12 years old. Cameras and film were quite expensive in the early 1980s, and my working class family have very few photos of me until I was about 6 years old. I am sure us ASEAN Hivers were all cute kids at some point in history, so let's see share some vintage images of ourselves and likely have some laughs in the process.

I have always been a fan of keeping old photos of mine but I am just so shy to share it because of how the photos were taken (at least for now). But maybe, I would have the courage to post them some time.
No problem, I wasn't able to join because I ran out of time. Perhaps the next challenge will suit you well.
I love old photos! And true enough I was also born in the 80s! 😁I had few photos when I was a child. It was kind of expensive to have your photo taken during those years.
I also don't have many photos from that time, but each one had a wild hairstyle, that's for sure.

After yesterday I took part by taking part in the challenge about my favorite book, today I again found that for community members there was a new challenge in the form of childhood photos, and it seems I can't take part in the challenge, I've worked hard to find photos of my childhood but I didn't find any archives about it, and today I regret why I was so careless that I didn't even save a single photo when I was little.
After contemplating for a long time, I smiled to myself, no longer blaming myself, because I realized that until I was 17 years old, I didn't have any cellphone and camera, and at that time I never took a photo of myself.
The only childhood photo I have is an elementary school report card photo when I was 7 years old, then a photo report card when I was in middle school and that was when I was 12 years old, the rest I don't have any other photos.
I used to think that if I had a photo when I was little it was really cute, maybe it could be the funniest childhood photo in the world, I remember exactly where when I was in elementary school when I was around 7 was the funniest period in my life.
When going to school of course with messy hair because the comb at that time was my 5 fingers, and hair oil which was really clear because it came from the morning well water in my bath, and of course the elastic belt because it was made of rubber bands , and now I'm laughing so hard when I remember that, of course if only I had a photo of when I was going to school when it would definitely be a unique joke to the world, this is a little ridiculous.
The challenge this time again made me careful and remember to save my children's childhood photos, because I don't want to regret it a second time, and when I'm old I can make jokes with them and show them their childhood photos.
I am very happy with this challenge, and it will definitely be very funny and packed to see the childhood of the asean hive members here later.
I lost quite a few photos of my childhood, but my only pics when I was very young are from studios and school photos, a bit like you. I think was around 1992 when my parents bought our first disposable cameras and we took our own pictures. I wanted to join this challenge, but my photos are back in the USA.

you are right my brother, I was personally born in 1980, and at that time the prices of goods were very cheap. Life goes on normally even though technology is not as advanced as it is today. At that time photo cameras were only owned by the rich among us because they were expensive. If people need a photo to do a document or whatever, then we have to go to a photo studio to get it. The photos are just like you said, Sometimes it looks very funny haha 🤣
Alright, looks like I have to dig through the old archives to see my collection of childhood photos. I forgot where I saved it, hopefully I'll get it soon so I can take part in this week's challenge. Who knows I won again hehe 😂

My daughters laughed when I explained how hard it used to be get photos. I told them if you didn't have a camera and wanted family photos, you had to make a reservation and pay a studio to take your pictures. I remember my mom making me wear my best clothes any time there were going to be photos taken.
I can also remember the disappointment of getting film developed only to discover that you are a terrible photographer 😁.
Finally, I am able to participate.

Wow! what an interesting theme, at first when I saw the photo, I was really wondering why all the faces in the cover photos looks kinda sad, some looked kinda angry, not happy at all.... haha.
So upon reading now I know, Well I don't know if I still have photos of me when I was young because our house burned down. I just hope my mom was able to salvage some.

But, really your photo really had me laughing. It's like I was looking at the family photo of the movie Parasite.... ahahaha
Sorry to hear that about your house and the photos lost with the fire. I lost some photos and things as a kid during a flood, but my parents were smart to always keep most of the family heirlooms in the attic in case of high water.
My mom began digitizing photos several years ago, and it will likely take a few more years to digitize all of the family photos. I love the family photo, clearly it's a tv show or parody of some kind, but I don't know what from.

I had hoped to have my mom take some digital pics of old photos, but I got too busy and wasn't able to arrange it. I have always been too scared to bring my photos to Cambodia, bad things happen here more often like house fires and floods, so it's probably not a good place to bring family heirlooms and whatnot.
That makes me sad to hear, @justinparke .
Although I didn't know much about Cambodia, if you told me it would be extremely risky to bring any valuables there, I would believe you.
Now I am eager to google about Cambodia, I guess curiousity kills the cat.

Haha, a little off topic, but it's funny what freckled skin is called in Khmer, it's "housefly sh#t, haha. That is the only way to talk about it, there are no other names, so when speaking Khmer, I occasionally have to refer to my skin as "fly sh#t skin," haha 😆🤦♂️.
LOL. This made me remember one of the popular name, "Tae", in other countries, which also means sh*t in our national language. 😁
Btw, I just noticed that you are all too serious in the above photo. The camera man seems to forgot to prompt you to smile or say "cheese". 😅
