Farming is always a journey of patience and hope, and today I want to share with you our own learning journey in planting sugarcane. It was really my husband’s want to plant sugarcane.
Sugarcane is one of the most common crops in our country, but not everyone realizes how important it is. We see sugar almost every day in our kitchen, in our drinks, or in desserts, but we rarely think about how it all started in the farm. One advantage of planting sugarcane is that it does not need very expensive maintenance compared to other crops. Once planted, it can survive with proper care, sunlight and water. The labor is more on the beginning stage, but once it grows, it is easier to maintain.
When we first started, the expenses were mostly for land preparation and planting materials. We had to clear the land, buy sugarcane cuttings and prepare the soil. Honestly, the cost was not too high because we were only planting on a small scale What it really needed was effort, time and consistency.
At three months. The sugarcane already showed green shoots. It was such a joy to see them, standing tall and healthy. My husband and I would often check them in the morning because this is in front only of our farm house making sure weeds were not taking over. At this stage, the farm already started to look lively and full of hope.
This stage requires some extra care, like adding fertilizer and making sure the plants had enough water.
At eight months, it was finally time to harvest. For a small farmer like us, this was the most exciting part of the journey. Holding those heavy, tall stalks of sugarcane give us a sense of pride, because they were the results of months of patience and care.
We do not produce as much sugarcane as the bigger farms. But for us, it was still a good harvest. We delivered the sugarcane directly to the nearby mill in our town. The process was simple, and from there, the canes would be turned into the sugar that people buy in the market.
It was really amazing to think that the sweet sugar in someone coffee or cake might have started from little farm.
This whole journey of planting sugarcane taught me a lot. Farming is not easy, but it is possible and fulfilling if you put your heart into it. Many people think that farming requires big land and big amount of money but starting small can already give your results.
Our sugarcane farm is proof that with dedication, patience and simple resources, you can also grow something valuable. The experience gave me more respect for farmers, because now I understand that hard work behind every spoon of sugar, we use daily.
To those who are thinking of trying farming, why not give it a try? Sugarcane, vegetables or any crop you choose will not only give you food or income, but also a sense of pride that you can grow something with your own hands.
