An Unexpected Strike from Behind the Front Line

Hello Splinterlands warriors! ⚔️🔥

A new season in the arena always brings new stories. Sometimes we discover unique strategies, sometimes we get new cards that spark curiosity, and sometimes… we encounter monsters that make us scratch our heads and say, “wow, if that attack lands, things could get messy.”

This time I want to share a story about one card from the fire element that recently caught my attention in the arena: Ballista Deadshot.

The first time I saw this card, it immediately reminded me of another escalation series card I discussed before, Magnificent Mollusk. They share one interesting similarity: a very high mana cost for a common monster, around 13 mana.

At first I thought, “Wow, that’s pretty expensive for a common card.”

But after seeing its stats… it actually makes sense.

Ballista Deadshot has very strong magic attack, reaching up to 6 magic damage at higher levels. That’s not a small number. In many battles, a single hit is already enough to remove a huge portion of an enemy monster’s HP.

On top of that, it has speed that can reach 5, which often allows it to attack first. And in Splinterlands, we all know that attacking first often means controlling the tempo of the battle.
What makes Ballista Deadshot even more interesting is the abilities it gains as it levels up.

At level 3, it gains Dispel. This ability can be very annoying for opponents because it removes buffs from the monster it hits.

So imagine this: your opponent has worked hard to build buffs or protection… and then one shot from Ballista arrives and suddenly all of that disappears.

Then at max level, it gains the Pinpoint ability.

This ability makes Sneak attacks never miss. In other words, if Ballista Deadshot becomes the target of a Sneak attack, the attacking monster will always hit it.

At first glance this might look like a weakness, but it actually opens interesting strategic possibilities—especially if you want to manipulate the enemy’s attack positioning.

What I find most fascinating about this card is how unpredictable its attacks feel. Sometimes I place a strong tank in front, expecting it to absorb the damage. But suddenly… the monster that gets hit is the one in the back.

Every round feels like a small game of roulette. No position truly feels safe. And when Ballista Deadshot hits its target, it’s not just HP that disappears—buffs can vanish too because of Dispel.

So the opponent doesn’t just lose health, they lose protection as well. And if you add life leech from an Archon, the situation becomes even worse—because that thick HP pool can grow even thicker.

The Battle That Made Me Pause

I once faced this card in a rather memorable match.

The ruleset was Equalizer, which makes all monsters start with the same HP.

In theory, that should make the match more balanced. No monster is too fragile.

But in the Splinterlands arena, theory often behaves very differently from reality.

Ballista Deadshot entered the battlefield with 6 magic damage.

And even though every monster had equal HP, that level of damage still hurt badly. Just a few rounds were enough for my team to start losing units.

One by one my monsters fell, and all I could do was watch as Ballista’s attacks continued to disrupt my team’s formation.

In the end, my opponent won the match, and I could only nod quietly while thinking, “Alright… this card is more dangerous than I thought.”

After seeing its power firsthand in the arena, here are several things that make this card stand out:

  • Huge magic damage, reaching up to 6.
  • Unpredictable attack patterns, making every position feel vulnerable.

Of course, it has weaknesses too. Against monsters with Magic Reflect, Ballista Deadshot can receive painful reflected damage.

However, with its relatively high HP at max level, it can usually still survive several rounds.

Final Thoughts and Strategy

For me personally, Ballista Deadshot is one of the more intimidating escalation cards in the arena.

Some strategies you can try if you own this card:

  • Use it in medium to high mana battles.
  • Pair it with an Archon that boosts magic attack.
  • Protect it with a strong tank so it can keep firing safely from the backline.

In short, Ballista Deadshot is not just an ordinary common monster.

It’s more like a magic cannon placed behind the battle line—silent, waiting… and then firing a single shot powerful enough to collapse the enemy’s formation. 💥
