Splinterlands: Climbing to Gold III and Upgraded My Saltwraith Bulkhead!

This morning when I started to play Splinterlands I really wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to the league position in Silver. After a few matches in Modern I suddenly found that I had climbed to Gold III which was a pleasant surprise! You can earn more rewards in Gold than Silver although the competition can be a bit stiffer in this higher league. Still, a very fun accomplishment!

And with the upgrade came the associated rewards:

My rewards for achieving Gold III were pretty nice this time around. Two Saltwraith Bulkhead cards and two gold Coralforged cards. Since I already have a level 5 gold foil those two went right up for sale. But the Saltwraith cards allowed me to level mine to level 4 adding an extra melee attack!

When I first got this card I didn't pay much attention to it. That was until I needed a cheaper tank in Life Splinter and tried it out. I've been a convert and use it regularly ever since. Finally reaching level 4 was exciting, as it's even more powerful now and a bigger threat to opponents. Since my archons only handle level four rare cards it's as far as I plan to upgrade him. If I were to upgrade to a stronger archon at some point those plans may change.

The big downside to the card is Weary meaning it has a ten percent chance of becoming exhausted every round. At level three it picks up Oppress where it does double damage to non attack cards. At level five it picks up Armored Strike destroying the armor of an attacked unit. At at level ten it picks up self heal, but unless you play in Diamond or Champion you likely won't ever get to use that ability. I wish that came at level three!

I used the upgraded card in a few matches, and this one was pretty interesting!

Time to see the upgrade in action with the five melee attack!

You can see the whole battle at this link here.

This is a battle in Modern with a mana cap of 52 and rulesets of Super Sneak and Might Makes Right. That means that all melee cards not in first position will attack the last card on the opposing team and that only units with three or more attack power are available for use in the match. The screenshot above was taken after the buffs were applied but before the action had started.

For my team I chose Incessant Sage as archon giving each of my team members one extra shielding. I chose Doomshield Warden as my tank which would normally give reach to the second team member, but the rulesets cancel that out. Next up I used the underappreciated Saltwraith Bulkhead and then added some magic with Mindless Thrall. Then some more magic in the mix with Nessa who also happens to be a flying type which is always a huge plus as it causes missed attacks. To round things out I put in two cards that were destined to be beat up but would put up a good fight, first Luceheim Demon followed by Halfling Refugee.

My opponent chose Kaylia Silverleaf as archon and Folen Flameye as tank. Next up was the formidable Lord Thanalor and then the ever nasty Grove Doomblade. Then we have Buttercup Mauler who is pretty nasty despite the name with Swell Spore Beast next up. Lioceros came last as a nasty little surprise with those thorns...

To be completely honest I thought I might be beat when I saw the lineup I was up against, but my team managed to soldier through and get the win.

Here just showing the nasty attack of Saltwraith Bulkhead, that five melee attack is painful!

By round two my Halfling Refugee is down for the count...

Again Saltwraith's nasty attack finishes off Lioceros but pays a price with those thorns!

By round three the field is slimming down quite a bit.

And again Saltwraith's nasty attack on Lord Thanalor.

Round four not much change... Been getting misses on both magic cards though thank goodness!

Round five and things are looking a little bleak for my team as Saltwraith Bulkhead has gone down.

Making some headway here in round six weakening Grove Doomblade.

But thanks to the heavy magic attacks and misses I am making a comeback, by taking out Buttercup Mauler the game is is all but over.

And Nessa delivers the the deathblow sealing the win for my team. Great game to my opponent! I'm lucky to have pulled out a win on this one! The speed and phase of the Mindless Thrall along with Nessa's flying saved the match for me. But still I had to chance to show my leveled up Saltwraith Bulkhead in action, his attack carries quite a wallop! It's always fun to have a new toy isn't it?

Today I'll skip pack openings since I haven't had any good ones in quite awhile. Maybe next time...

That will wrap up this Splinterlands post and I hope you enjoyed it! It was fun to level up to Gold III, get and upgrade, and even a couple gold foils to sell to boot. Not a bad day!
