Spellmonger: The Underrated Card in the Frontier

The Spellmonger is a rare Neutral unit from the Frontier. It has become one of the more interesting defensive cards in that mode of play. In today's post, we'll go over his lore, his stats & abilities and how he's used in battles.
Lore
From the Splinterlands lore:
*The Dragonsguard is the military arm of the Gloridax Empire, responsible for the law, order, and protection of its lands. Service is considered a great honor and elevates a family’s hierarchical status within the empire.
Most who join the Dragonsguard as ronach train for the sword, the bow, or the saddle. But others train in the arcane. Among them are spellmongers, specialists in retaliatory wards and punishment magic that turns aggression back on the attacker. They often serve as arcane adjuncts and protective wardcasters for Dragonsguard commanders.
Foes of the spellmonger usually learn too late; the spell that kills them was cast long before they attacked.*
Stats and Abilities
Even at maxed levels, the Spellmonger has very modest stats and abilities for a rare card, making it easy to discount. He has no attack and his best ability is Thorns. Worse, he cannot be benefit from Weapons Training. However, he's one of the best cards used for defense or to trap enemies in the Frontier. Spellmonger is useful as a melee counter. An enemy Opportunity or Sneak attacker may target Spellmonger, only to take significant reflected damage because of Thorns.
Featured Battle
In this battle, the mana cap was small but the ruleset included Equalizer. It's a perfect situation to use the Spellmonger. I set him up as my tank giving me an anti melee card in front that will have equal health as the enemy. Then I followed with two magic attackers giving me three cards.
My enemy only used two cards, Dread Tafarian who has healing and a magic attacker in the back giving him only two cards. In Equalizer rulesets, it's best if you have more cards in the team to take advantage of the health bonus. My Spellmonger with Thorns countering the enemy's melee attacker assisted by my two magic damage dealers in the back overwhelmed the enemy's Dread Tafarian in spite of its healing.
