Something I’ve never talked about is the new “Rarity” variants in Splinterlands—I’m referring to the “Black Foil,” “Gold Foil Arcane,” and “Black Foil Arcane” cards. Although I don’t think how to obtain them is a mystery to anyone, it’s important for all players to know this information, because the reality is that you can find out if you do some research, but not many new players know about it, and even if they did, they might not know how to earn them—and that’s what I want to explain in this post.

This means that, in this post, you’ll learn about all the odds and methods available in the game for obtaining these variants, which are quite expensive on the market and therefore very difficult to get, so it’s important that you read the entire post, as it’s packed with relevant information. However, I won’t overwhelm you with too much detail, so you can rest assured on that front. My goal is always to provide you with the necessary information because—believe it or not—this is a great way to make money in Splinterlands, and not everyone takes advantage of it.

So, if you want to know how to obtain these super-rare CARD variants, read to the end, because it will really help you decide whether you might want to try to earn these cards or, alternatively, focus on many of the other ways to make money in Splinterlands.

What Are the Current Classifications of the “Variants”?

Even if you feel or think that this section of the post is useless because all or most players are already familiar with the current variations in the game, the reality is that here I’ll explain the true value of these variations—though it’s not exactly earth-shattering— but it’s not something I see discussed in the content that’s shared, so I’d like to take this opportunity to share some information about it—which, as I mentioned, practically no one talks about.

To start, let’s explain “Variations,” which is the simplest part:

image.png

All Variants and Their Details

image.png

  • Regular Foil (RF): This is the most basic and standard version of “Splinterlands” cards; it’s the most common type and requires you to level it up using copies of the same card.

  • Gold Foil (GF): This is the regular card, but with a “Gold Border.” Depending on the edition, it may look different, but it features the classic gold color of the gold variants. Generally, these cards grant a decent bonus in ranked battles—specifically, the RSHARE multiplier.

  • Black Foil (BF): This is one of the most significant innovations introduced in card variants. Instead of being the color of the element or Splinter, the border is completely “black,” giving it a striking dark finish. But that’s not all—there are more details:

    • Instant Max Level: When you get a BF card, the best part is that it comes fully maxed out at its maximum level. This is a truly incredible advantage, as you can make the most of it in many ways.

    • Superior Reward Bonus: Just like traditional GF cards, these cards offer a higher bonus to the RSHARE reward multiplier, so using them in battle can be really profitable.

    • Advantage in Survival Mode: As if that weren’t enough, when you play with these cards in Survival Mode, if they’re defeated, they have half the freeze time of their normal variants, so you get them back much faster.

  • Gold Foil Arcane (GFA): This is one of the rarest variants in the entire game, as it features a background animation that makes it a one-of-a-kind card—not to mention that it includes a physical serial number found on no other card in its series, such as #01/25.

  • Black Foil Arcane (BFA): If the GFA was already one of the rarest cards ever seen, the BFA is incredibly rare. Of course, it has the same benefits as the GFA, including the serial number, not to mention that both come at max level.

"Black Foil" Variants (Launch Mechanics, Probabilities, and Power-Ups)

NOTE: In this section, I’ll explain most of the important aspects of these extremely rare variants featured in the game, although I think I’ll fall short—because I want to be very clear—so I’ll most likely finish this in a second part. But, so as not to delay any further with explanations…

The main difference between these cards and the traditional ones—which can be obtained by opening packs or purchasing with GLINTS from the rewards store—is that “Black Foil” cards are governed by very specific probability algorithms that differ from the traditional ones. These cards can be obtained through VOUCHER packs in the exclusive store or during specific events, but the best part is that we can “boost” that probability with special “Potions.” But so you don’t get confused, I’ll explain the probabilities:

image.png

Base Probability of Obtaining

When these cards are released at events or when we have a triple release in the VOUCHERS “Exclusive Store,” the odds of a card being a Gold Foil or Black Foil version are set by default. For example:

  • Gold Foil (Base): Has a drop rate of 2.0% (1 in 50).

  • Black Foil (Base):

    • Common Card: 1 in 4,000 (0.025%).
    • Rare Card: 1 in 3,500 (~0.0286%).
    • Legendary Card: 1 in 2,500 (0.040%).

What Is the Impact of Potions? Alchemy vs. Midnight

To increase our chances of winning these hands, there are two types of positions; you may already be familiar with one of them, but the other is a little less well-known:

  • Alchemy Potions (for Gold Foil):

    • Doubles the Gold Foil drop rate from 2.0% to 4.0%.

    • Consumes a number of potions equal to the cost per rarity (2 potions for Common, 4 for Rare, 20 for Legendary).

    • Guaranteed per Bundle: When purchasing 50 cards at once during Voucher sales using Alchemy Potions, the system guarantees 1 Gold Foil per bundle (effective odds of 1 in 25).

  • Midnight Potions (for Black Foil):

  • Midnight Potions are specific reagents designed to double the probability of a Black Foil card appearing.

    • Potion Consumption by Rarity:
    • Common Card: Requires 2 Midnight Potions per card.
    • Rare Card: Requires 4 Midnight Potions per card.
    • Legendary Card: Requires 20 Midnight Potions per card.

Finally, here’s a table clearly showing the probabilities and costs for Black Foil

Card RarityBase ProbabilityProbability with Midnight PotionsExpected Frequency (with Potion)Potions Required per CardIs There a Guarantee per Pack?

Final Thoughts

With this, I hope you now understand how the “Variants” of these cards work and why we should pay attention to them—because they are not only unique works of art and exclusive additions to our collections, but also because their high market value, combined with their burn value through DECS, means that owning them is undoubtedly synonymous with rewards.

See you on the "Battlefield"
