Best regards Splinterlovers đź’š

Splinterlands is a game where, if we want to win, we have to learn the rules—or rather, everything that really goes into the game. One of the most important aspects of the game is skills, which are essential for progressing. As we level up our cards, we gain the skills needed to win battles—which, in the end, is what matters most and will allow us to earn rewards over time, as long as we’re consistent, of course.

On the other hand, today I want to do something a little different: I’d like to talk about five key skills that every beginner player should master and/or learn to progress much faster than usual. in fact, when I talk about skills or cards, I always emphasize the “Rules”—or what are now called “Modifiers”—that help players understand the game, and that’s because they’re the most important thing of all when it comes to learning. So, it’s important that you pay close attention to this post, especially newcomers and those just starting out

So, if you want to know what those 4 skills are that every new player needs to master, stick around until the end of this post:

Abilities (Taunt and Sneak)

In this section, I'll explain these three key skills that every beginner player should always master. Although there are many skills, it's fine to start with these, and I'm sure that, little by little, with practice, you'll be able to master them all:

Taunt: The Damage-Protecting Magnet

In a normal battle, attackers typically focus their attacks—if you’ll pardon the redundancy—on the unit leading the opposing team in the first position, which is the “Tank,” so the Taunt ability radically changes this defensive behavior.

  • How exactly does it work? A unit with Taunt draws all enemy card attacks toward itself, regardless of its position; however, there are clear exceptions: Taunt does not divert an enemy unit that is already in the front position (which will attack whoever is in front of it), nor does it affect attacks that follow special rules such as Reach, Scattershot, or Wingbreak.

  • Role on the battlefield: Its main function is to act as a survival magnet. If you place a durable monster with Taunt in mid-line or rear positions, all enemy cards will focus their damage on it, leaving your main tank in the front line and your weaker attackers safe.

Sneak: The Silent Assault on the Rear Guard

Many novice players make the mistake of focusing all their defense on their first monster, leaving all the monsters positioned at the back unprotected. The Sneak offensive ability is specifically designed to punish that oversight.

  • How exactly does it work? Units with Sneak can attack from any position they’re placed in and automatically direct their attacks against the last unit in the enemy lineup. If there are no units left in the enemy’s rear, they’ll start attacking the next available unit until they reach the current tank.

  • Role on the battlefield: It acts as an assassination force that infiltrates specifically to target a single point on the battlefield. It allows you to bypass the opponent’s tank and destroy support units that heal or boost stats from behind, thereby ruining the opponent’s strategy before they can react.

Abilities (Opportunity and Shield)

These skills are also very useful, and although they're basic, they never really go out of style, so it's definitely important to learn them:

Opportunity: The Predatory Instinct Against the Weakest

While a normal card attacks from the front and one with Sneak attacks from the back, a unit with Opportunity targets the weakest card on the opposing team in terms of hit points.

  • How exactly does it work? A monster with Opportunity can attack from any position and automatically targets the enemy team unit with the lowest number of hit points at that moment.

  • Role on the field: It functions as a finisher—basically, the one that finishes the job, so to speak. If one of your previous attacks left an enemy card with just 1 or 2 life points, your unit with Opportunity will select it as a target and remove it from the field, immediately reducing the number of attacks your opponent can make in subsequent rounds and eliminating that “Support” that might otherwise keep the cards alive through their abilities.

Shield: The Armor That Cuts Physical Damage in Half

Surviving on the front lines requires much more than a character with a high number of health points. The Shield ability is the quintessential defensive pillar for tanks.

  • How exactly does it work? Shield reduces all damage taken from melee and ranged attacks by 50% (rounded up). Furthermore, if a physical attack has only 1 power point, the reduction causes it to deal 0 damage, making the character with this ability completely immune to weak attacks.

  • Role on the battlefield: It is the essential ability required for the frontline position; furthermore, it allows a monster to withstand twice as much physical damage as its base stats indicate, buying crucial time for the allied rear guard to eliminate the enemy.

Conclusion

While this is very basic information, it's essential if you want to learn how to play the game correctly and use those skills to your advantage to survive on the battlefield and become a more competitive and successful player. So, learn not only the skills but also the rules—this will give you a much bigger edge over other players who don't.

I invite everyone to join Splinterlands, the best game based on chains of blocks, full of adventures, battles, and strategies where you will have fun and get rewards according to your league
