Splinterlands: Between Mass Adoption and the Institutional Horizon in 2026

Best regards Splinterlovers 💚

Since Splinterlands was created in 2018, it started out as a simple game built on blockchain technology and what was then gaining a lot of traction as “Web3.” I remember those days when everything revolved almost entirely around playing—I mean, our economy was practically tied solely to DEC, in addition to the tokenizable “items,” such as packs and so on. But right now—and for quite some time now, I’d say since 2021 with the launch of SPS—Splinterlands is no longer just a game; it’s a complete economic infrastructure powered by blockchain technology.

All of this has led the game and its ecosystem to refine their system over time to consistently attract players, including those who start out for free—and that’s great. I think that as a game, we have everything we need to attract casual players and those who might be interested in the game and invest a few hundred dollars to improve and progress, but on the other side of the table lies the challenge of capturing the interest of institutional investors—the so-called “Whales”—which will help boost the SPS, the governance token.

So, the purpose of this post is to analyze the game’s current state and identify the areas where improvements are needed to attract large-scale investment that will help bring the game into the spotlight.

The Retention Base and Game Mechanics

This section will cover everything related to the game, its mechanics, and its in-game economy. I’ll touch on several interesting points to provide some context, ranging from turning the tables to institutional capital, so let’s get started:

Details

  • Gameplay and Retention: What’s incredibly great about Splinterlands—and what sets it apart from other games—is that it isn’t a game based on the player’s split-second reaction, but rather on analyzing and strategizing the battle before it happens. All of this is thanks to the rules, which make it very easy and fast to play, turning it into a frenetic game of rapid automatic battles. All of this helps retain any player looking for something fun and fast-paced, so they stick around—that’s where true retention lies.

  • Internal Economy: Over time, Splinterlands has evolved its internal economy, which has completely prevented value drain—something that happened in many other games, none of which exist today. On one hand, there’s GLINT, which you earn in “Ranked” mode and which essentially serves as a progression token, since you use it in the shops to boost your deck’s power. On the other hand, there’s SPS, which is not only the Governance token but also the “Rewards” token, and it also acts as a multiplier for those rewards if you stake it. Finally, there’s DEC, which is essentially the game’s transaction token.

  • Barrier to Entry and Community: I’d say the barrier to entry for the game has been reduced by 80%, since right now you can start playing Splinterlands for free; before, it was more complicated—you had to buy the “Spellbook.” On the other hand, you can build a community of players to team up with, form a “Guild,” and participate in guild wars to win SPS rewards. So, right now, everything comes together to get you started and having fun.

  • Integration with other ecosystems: This is a very important aspect that could certainly catapult Splinterlands into the spotlight. In fact, I believe this is one of the best ways to generate buzz for both projects—it’s a win-win situation, since the communities overlap and this can help everything grow.

The Path to Attracting Institutional Capital (Whales)

For the SPS to experience exponential growth—whether rapid or gradual over time—we need it to grow 5x, 10x, 20x, and so on. We cannot achieve this with the current community; we need fresh capital, so we must work to attract these major players to the ecosystem. For this to happen, the following must occur:

What we need to spark interest

  • Liquidity and Presence on Major Exchanges: To generate buzz around the project and the upcoming game, we need SPS to be listed on top-tier exchanges—such as centralized exchanges like Binance, Bybit, OKX, etc. This is where the bulk of liquidity resides, and it could significantly boost the price of SPS if this happens. Of course, it’s not easy; it requires a fee and a certain volume, but it would be very positive for the project.

  • Token Utility and Deflation: We already have this, but it’s a requirement that investors certainly look for, since if the token has no utility and is also inflationary, they would never invest; however, if the token has utility, this alone tells an investor that it can appreciate over time, since it is necessary for the system to function; on the other hand, if the token is deflationary and has a burning mechanism, the supply decreases over time, which would certainly attract the attention of institutional investors.

  • Marketing and Visibility: This is what’s missing for the entire system of generating attention to work, since we all agree that for a project to succeed, it needs attention; therefore, this is a key element in making sure everyone knows about it. Of course, doing this doesn’t mean spending thousands of dollars without getting results—you have to do it differently, and I believe it’s possible.

Conclusion

With all that said, it seems to me that Splinterlands already has absolutely everything it needs to succeed. The gameplay, mechanics, and barriers to entry are all excellent, and the best part is that they can continue to improve. However, the latter is an area that needs work, as it is what will truly propel the whole project forward, especially the SPS.
