I’ve been exploring different ways to build a balanced team in Splinterlands, and one thing I’ve come to appreciate is the importance of protecting weaker monsters. Sometimes, I focus so much on finding powerful attackers that I forget how quickly a useful support monster can be eliminated if it is left exposed.
One ability that caught my attention is Taunt. It forces enemy monsters that can target it to attack the monster with Taunt, rather than choosing their usual targets. I find this particularly interesting because it can change the direction of enemy attacks and give the rest of my team some protection.
However, I have also learned that using Taunt requires careful planning. The monster carrying the ability will attract a lot of attention, so it needs enough health or defensive support to withstand the incoming attacks. Putting a weak monster in that position without considering the consequences could make the situation worse.
I also like thinking about how Taunt works with healing. If I have a monster that can restore the health of my Taunt monster, I may be able to keep it alive longer. Combining protection and healing can make the strategy more effective, although I still need to consider how much damage the opposing team can produce.
Another important detail is that Taunt does not make a monster immune to attacks. It redirects targeting; it does not prevent damage. Certain abilities and battle conditions can also affect how attacks work, so I cannot assume that every enemy will always behave in exactly the same way.
What I find most interesting is how Taunt changes the way I think about team roles. Sometimes, the most important monster in a lineup is not the one dealing the most damage. It might be the one absorbing attacks and allowing everyone else to do their jobs.
For me, building a good team is not just about choosing strong cards. It is about knowing which monsters need protection, which ones can provide it, and how to make the entire lineup work as one unit. Sometimes, protecting the right monster can make all the difference.
