Gods Unchained and Splinterlands were the Best Card Games of the Year 2024

Splinterlands has achieved the 2nd place in the PlayToEarn Game Awards 2024 for the Best Card Game! Gods Unchained took the 1st place and Axie Infinity made it on the podium as well. This is huge for Splinterlands as it took the Silver medal which exposes us to the entire play2earn crypto gamers out there. It proves what an amazing community we have here and that when the call to arms is shouted, we prove our support.

Comparison

I must say that I played both Gods Unchained and Splinterlands. Due to time constraints and the fact that Gods Unchained requires much more time and strategy to battle, I ended up giving up on it even if I found the game quite challenging and entertaining. On the other hand Splinterlands offers a better gameplay and it is versatile when it comes to faster entertainment. Instead of staying and taking the time to strategy like in chess, Splinterlands understood that card games can be enjoyable even at a faster pace. And I think there are players like me appreciating that.

Gods Unchained

  • Free-to-Play accessibility enables Gods Unchained to offer a free-to-play model, allowing new players to earn and trade NFT cards without upfront investment. It requires more hard work, but you can make it.
  • Immutable ownership makes that players fully own their cards as blockchain-backed NFTs, enabling complete freedom to trade, sell, or collect them outside the game.
  • Intensive strategic gameplay makes the game competitive and skill-based matches where thoughtful deck-building and tactical play determine success.
  • Play-and-Earn model allows the players to earn $GODS tokens, which can be used for governance, crafting cards, or trading on blockchain marketplaces.
  • Evolving metagame brings regular updates, card expansions, and seasonal events. Gods Unchained provides a dynamic, ever-changing gaming experience.

Splinterlands

  • Extended Play-to-Earn economy by allowing players to earn crypto (SPS, Glint, Vouchers) and cards through gameplay, combining fun and financial rewards seamlessly.
  • Open markets where users can trade cards or rent cards, trade cryptocurrency like SPS or DEC and even participate to high valuable cards auctions.
  • Various gameplay through Daily Battles, Guild Battles, Tournaments and newly announced "Survival" mode. You can get bored in it.
  • Land expansion which is still in development but already allowing users to earn resources by putting cards at use. You can even earn Splintershards (SPS) from land that you can trade later on.
  • Liquidity Pools on different blockchain which allows anyone to diversify the investment and earnings in the game not only by playing it.

Which one will you pick? It is a matter of preference as both games inspire a different style and way of playing it. Gods Unchained requires more strategizing and time to go through battling, thus it will have you busy with it. On the other hand Splinterlands lets you given Skip battle preview after you've made your formation and sent it into battle. For those that know really well the game and play it right, this can translate into time saving, a resource we all treasure.

In the end what I can say as I played both games is that I prefer Splinterlands as it was a pioneer in the play2earn blockchain game space and it has grown in an entire ecosystem where you can find your place. And it is less time consuming than Gods Unchained and probably many other crypto card games out there. I encourage you to give it a chance and you might be surprise of the fun that you will have, of the learning that you'll get out of it and of the earnings you'll be able to get.

Nice to see Splinterlands taking second place to GU. I thought it was already surpassed by newer TCGs like Parallel.
