Halloween Art - Spooky Scenery using crayons and digital art

Halloween Art 2022 - Crayon Art Scenery

Crayons

I never really loved crayons, to be honest, I thought that if I bought myself some more expensive crayons, I'd maybe feel more inspired. Truth is though, this never really happened. I made one artwork that I actually loved and put up for sale on nftshowroom, and then started this one, quite some time ago, but never finished it. When we were prepping our emigration, I aimed to at least finish this artwork before leaving otherwise my time spent on it would have been wasted.

Orange sky

I saw some art with a colored sky and orange sunset, I thought this would look cool in contrast with black in the front. I didn't know exactly what yet but I just focussed on the background first. Let's be honest, I had no clue how to handle this, I probably should have watched a youtube video first, lol. But I'm not afraid to share my not-so-great stuff as they are all part of my journey!

I used thick paper that I used for watercolouring as well, but it seems that this was the only paper I had that would be resistant to the pressure applied when using crayons.

The beginning: the sun.

Applying orange and mixing it up a bit was harder than I thought it would be.

After orange, I added pink, blue, yellow, and green but it was not as smooth as I hoped, haha.

Yes, I'm laughing at myself a bit here because when I was trying this, you can't even imagine my frustration because my hands were hurting from the pressure I applied, I started to hate these stupid crayons at this point. It did not represent what I was trying to create and my fingernails were covered with wax. What did I get myself into?

But, I really hate not finishing something. I sometimes put some drawings or artwork back into the closet for a year, maybe longer before I finish it, but eventually, I finish it! I had to do the same with this one.

The next part

I decided that the background is what it is, I didn't want to ruin my paper and have this all done for nothing so I continued with the sketching of the tree and house.

I used a regular pencil for this before I continued with a black crayon.

As you can see, I added it quite thick as I felt this was the only way to cover the bottom layer.

Adding paint

At this point I didn't like the way the black looked so I thought, let's try adding black acrylic paint.

They are still not high-quality artworks, but at least it looks more black :)

I thought it was a good idea to add some brown, don't ask me why!

The End Result

Below is the original end result as is:

I really wasn't feeling it when my initial idea was to add bats but when I was handling the crayons, it was quite clear pretty early on that trying to add bats with crayons would probably mean ruining the sunset background. Instead, I used some Canva magic to make it look better:

As you may (or may not) have noticed, I also moved the window to the middle because that was something I found highly annoying when that didn't work out. I like the edited result, so at least I have something fun digitally, the original one is left behind in Budapest.

I hope you liked reading about this crayon journey, the next experiment will definitely not be crayons :-)

Have a good week! Tomorrow I will probably post another Halloween crafting tutorial.

OMG what a beautiful drawing, what great colors, I like it is very uniform and looks like paint. A beautiful work of art.

Thanks, partially it is paint, at least the top layer of it as I didn't like it when the crayons weren't as booming black as I hoped. So the black is done with crayon and a layer of paint on top.

Thanks for the comment :)

Crayons or not, I think you pulled off a really good piece of work, here. I loved seeing the progression, too. I have a great respect for people who can envision what they're working toward. Really nice!

Thank you so much, I appreciate the comment :)
I don't think crayons are for me though, lol. I left them in Budapest when we moved to Spain lol.. but at least I got to finish this one before we left..

Art things are hard to predict. What is in our heads, is difficult to realize with our hands. This often happens when I make my food art.

When the result isn't quite what we wanted it to be, then it just takes a little more creativity to make the end result look better (rather than completely ruined lol)

You did it :)

Painting with wax crayons is the best, it gives you a different experience than doing it with traditional ones. Your drawing looks great ♥
