Today I would like to tell you about a project that I particularly enjoyed: my homemade step tower for strawberries and garlic. It was an idea that had been floating around in my head for a long time, and now it's finally here – sturdy, well thought-out and already planted.

I cut each individual board myself – with a lot of patience and attention to detail. The structure consists of four tiers, each double height, so that the plants have enough space to grow. I screwed the individual tiers together using square timbers and lined the inside with fleece and foil so that the soil is held securely and moisture cannot escape uncontrollably.

For additional stability, I installed two crossbars in the middle of each level. If the soil should settle over time, the basic structure will remain stable and load-bearing. Each step is designed to rest on one of these crossbars and be neatly supported.

I filled the tower with all kinds of material – old straw, leaves, small pieces of wood, basically anything I could get my hands on. I finished off with a layer of compost soil, which provides a nutrient-rich base for the whole thing.

In the first two tiers, I have planted garlic seeds – specifically for so-called single bulbs, which I will later transplant until they develop into strong, fully formed garlic bulbs. The third tier is reserved for strawberries, which I have grown from lovingly collected cuttings. I collected them myself – a small gift that I planted with great care.

The combination of garlic and strawberries is not only practical, but also a clever choice. Garlic keeps snails and other pests away, while strawberries thrive in its vicinity. It's a natural symbiosis that complements each other wonderfully and does not require any chemical agents.

And the top tier? I deliberately left that free for marigolds or chamomile – both are not only pretty to look at, but also valuable helpers in the garden. Marigolds deter nematodes and other soil parasites, while chamomile has a calming effect on plants and attracts beneficial insects at the same time. This makes the tower not only functional, but also a small ecological balance in itself.
The entire project took about a week – from the first saw cut to the last plant. And now that everything is planted, I'm just happy. It's a wonderful feeling to have created something with my own hands that is not only functional but also gives life.

I am already looking forward to the first sweet strawberries and the spicy garlic, which is quietly and powerfully making its way. And perhaps my little tower will inspire you to start your own garden project – because something you have built yourself has soul.

heute möchte ich euch von einem Projekt erzählen, das mir besonders viel Freude bereitet hat: meinem selbst gebauten Stufenturm für Erdbeeren und Knoblauch. Es war eine Idee, die schon lange in meinem Kopf herumschwirrte, und nun steht er da – stabil, durchdacht und bereits bepflanzt.

Ich habe jedes einzelne Brett selbst zugeschnitten – mit viel Geduld und Liebe zum Detail. Die Konstruktion besteht aus vier Stufen, jede in doppelter Höhe, sodass die Pflanzen genügend Raum haben, sich zu entfalten. Die einzelnen Ebenen habe ich mithilfe von Kanthölzern miteinander verschraubt und im Inneren mit Vlies und Folie ausgekleidet, damit die Erde gut gehalten wird und keine Feuchtigkeit unkontrolliert entweichen kann.

Für zusätzliche Stabilität habe ich in der Mitte jeder Ebene zwei Querhölzer verbaut. Falls die Erde im Laufe der Zeit absacken sollte, bleibt das Grundgerüst dennoch stabil und tragfähig. Jede Stufe ist dabei so angelegt, dass sie auf einem dieser Riegel aufliegt und sauber abgestützt wird.

Befüllt habe ich den Turm mit allerlei Material – altem Stroh, Laub, kleinen Hölzern, einfach allem, was ich in die Finger bekam. Den Abschluss bildete eine Schicht Komposterde, die dem Ganzen eine nährstoffreiche Grundlage gibt.

In die ersten zwei Stufen habe ich Knoblauch in Saat gesetzt – gezielt für sogenannte Monoknollen, die ich später weiterziehen werde, bis sie sich zu kräftigen, voll ausgebildeten Knoblauchknollen entwickeln. Die dritte Stufe gehört den Erdbeeren, die ich aus liebevoll gesammelten Ablegern gewonnen habe. Ich habe sie mir selbst abgesammelt – ein kleines Geschenk, das ich mit großer Sorgfalt eingepflanzt habe.

Die Kombination aus Knoblauch und Erdbeeren ist nicht nur praktisch, sondern auch klug gewählt. Der Knoblauch hält Schnecken und andere Schädlinge fern, während die Erdbeeren sich in seiner Nähe besonders wohlfühlen. Eine natürliche Symbiose, die sich wunderbar ergänzt und ganz ohne chemische Mittel auskommt.

Und die oberste Stufe? Die habe ich bewusst freigelassen für Tagetes oder Kamille – beide sind nicht nur hübsch anzusehen, sondern auch wertvolle Helfer im Garten. Tagetes wirken abschreckend auf Nematoden und andere Bodenparasiten, während Kamille beruhigend auf die Pflanzen wirkt und gleichzeitig nützliche Insekten anzieht. So wird der Turm nicht nur funktional, sondern auch ein kleines ökologisches Gleichgewicht für sich.

Das gesamte Projekt hat etwa eine Woche gedauert – vom ersten Sägeschnitt bis zur letzten Pflanze. Und jetzt, da alles bepflanzt ist, bin ich einfach nur glücklich. Es ist ein schönes Gefühl, etwas mit den eigenen Händen geschaffen zu haben, das nicht nur funktional ist, sondern auch Leben schenkt.

Ich freue mich schon auf die ersten süßen Erdbeeren und den würzigen Knoblauch, der sich still und kraftvoll seinen Weg bahnt. Und vielleicht inspiriert euch mein kleiner Turm ja zu eurem eigenen Gartenprojekt – denn selbstgebautes hat Seele.
