Hi, my fellow needleworker! I hope you all are doing well. I made a jean from scratch recently and it turned out to be beautiful so I'd like to show you through the process, what inspired it and the outcome.
It's been approximately 5 years since I started making my wardrobe. I find it hard at first to make a ready-to-wear outfit like a t-shirt, jeans, shirts, and so on. One of the issues I faced was getting suitable materials. However, I realise that I was looking for them in the wrong place. Now I'm able to get the materials although not all.
This discovery made it easy for me to get my preferred fabric and that brings us to the project I'm sharing with you today. I got a denim fabric initially to make a Schiaparelli-inspired dress but later changed my mind to make a pair of jeans. Though I still have it in mind to make the dress, I can't get my mind off it.
Now, what inspired me to make these jeans, was the fact that I have no black jeans. As funny as it may sound, what drove me to make this jean was a lack of cloth. Also, I was inspired by the comfort of wearing a baggy black jeans that go with every top or t-shirt.
Without much story, let's get into the tutorial.
Material used
1.5 yards of denim fabric
Thread
Jean zip
Lining/ pocketing for the front pocket
The process:
My first step is to wash my fabric. I don't usually do this but I heard it is a good step to prevent shrinking when you wash after making the clothes.
After washing, I start to cut. I cut the front piece first which I cut on the fold.
I used 45 inches as the length including hem allowance, my waist measurement divided by 4, the hip measurement divided by 4, my thigh measurement divided by 2, waist to hip as 9 inches, and my crouch depth as 11 inches.
I place the front piece on another folded fabric and cut the back piece. The back piece is typically longer and bigger than the front by 2 inches.
After cutting the back, I slant the waist to make sure the sides are the same length but on the crotch side the front is an inch lower and the back is 2 inches higher. I normally use 1.5 inches but for some with bigger hips, 2-2.5 inches is ok.
Now for the back, I have to create a panel 3inches high. I had to cut away from the back and add back what I cut with 1 inch higher as the sewing allowance.
For the front, I cut the side pockets.
I cut the back pockets. 6.5 by 7 inches
I cut the band as well, 2.5 inches wide and my waist measurement plus 2 inches as the length. 1 inch for the fly extension and the other for the allowance.
After I was done cutting, I started to sew
I sew the back pieces together
I sew the front pocket
Then I sew the back pocket
I sew the front zip
I joined the sides and the inseams
I sew the waistband
I fold the hem
I did all the other finishing
