Hello needleworkers, today I'd love to share with you an outfit I made for my sister-in-law. She gave birth last two weeks she spent 6 days in the hospital after birth. In Nigerian culture, a naming ceremony is held after 8 days of a child's birth. Since she spent 6 days in the hospital, she was discharged 2 days before the naming ceremony. I also came home the same day she was discharged and she told me she wasn't prepared and she had no outfit prepared for the naming ceremony. Due to the very limited time she had, she told me to make a simple iro(wrapper) and buba(blouse) outfit.
Iro and Buba is a Nigerian traditional outfit, which is mostly worn for ceremonies.
The iro is basically a large fabric that is wrapped around the body or waist, while the buba is a voluminous blouse. This outfit is usually worn with gele (scarf).
Iro and Buba is very easy to sew and so elegant and sophisticated when worn. It took me about 2 hours to make. The material used is a dry lace fabric. I made an inner chimney afterward due to the transparency of the lace.
Let me walk you through the process, I didn't snap the whole process because I was in a hurry. firstly the materials used were; the main lace fabric, thread, and bias binding.
STEP ONE
cutting
Fold the main fabric into 4. Then use the bust measurement to cut the perimeter of the buba adding an inch ease allowance and one inch sewing allowance.
Then measure 4.5 by 4 inches on the center edge as illustrated below. This will represent the neck.
The length of the buba is the breadth of the lace on the fold.
For the sleeves, I use 14inches by 15 inches on fold which includes 1 inch allowance
For the iro(wrapper) I use 2 .5 yards of fabric and use the rest of the fabric as gele(scarf).
I also cut a rope for the iro(wrapper) for easy tie.
STEP TWO
sewing
I joined the buba(blouse) pieces together
And I used bias binding as an interface to the neckline to prevent fraying
I hem the sides of the 2.5 yards of fabric of the iro(wrapper) to prevent fraying.
I also hem the sides of the scarf.
This is the final look on her, she styled it with a blue geIe(scarf) and with gold accessories.
Do you like it? What's your thought?
