Making A Beach Top From Grandma’s Old Cloth

As at this point, there’s a whole war going on in my house because of grandma’s cloth. It’s actually funny how everyone didn’t want anything to do with grandma’s cloth some weeks back but now, my table is full of designs. After I made the scarf, bralette and the tie front top for my sisters, my cousins now also want their own share of Grandma’s cloth.

I’m really happy that I’ve been able to add a little life to grandma’s cloth and now it’s going to be with us in different forms for a long time.
My little cousin came to me with her own design and I have no idea where she got it from but I knew I had to deliver. She said she was going to wear it to the beach.

Looking at the number of things I have to do with the cloth, I realized I had to be economical about it. I was glad this particular style she showed me wouldn’t even need a lot of cloth.
I spent about 4 hours on this top, trying to get the perfect result for her.

Materials I used were;
• Granny square made from leftover yarn
• 1.60mm crochet hook
• needle
• leftover yarn

Procedure
I started by making the granny square days before the project.In making the square, I made 4 chains and then made 4 sets of 3 double crochet separated with 2 chains. I built on this with 3 sets of double crochet separated but 2 chains at the 4 corners till I got the desired size of square I wanted.

I then went ahead to the other parts of the top. I cut 2 squares of the same size as the granny square and then sewed them to the granny square using the needle and yarn.

After securing them together, I crocheted the floral designs at the edges and then I finished with the body of the top. I did this so the cloth wouldn’t fray since it’s very old.

I moved to the straps of the top. She wanted the straps to draw an “X” shape at her back so I changed her style and crocheted 150 chains for both straps so she could cross it at her back and still tie it.

The result

It felt so good to see her smile the moment she saw the result. I asked her if she could be my model and she didn’t even hesitate. I’m so happy I’m using my skills to turn our Grandma’s old cloth into something cool for everyone.
Thank you for your time.
