Lighting up the night for her - a bittersweet Diwali this time

Through changing times - holding onto festive joy for her

Tomorrow is Sunday, and it happens to be Diwali, bringing with it that familiar, unmistakable buzz of anticipation. For children, it is easily one of the most awaited times of the year, filled with the sheer thrill of bursting firecrackers and lighting up the night sky. In our household, the preparations have always followed a deeply ingrained practice - every single year, we make a dedicated trip to a wholesale cracker market located about 25 kilometers away from our apartment. It is a bustling place, situated close to my native home, and navigating that crowded space to pick out the best sparklers and ground wheels has always been a core part of our festive routine. Initially, we were feeling a bit hesitant and heavy-hearted about the trip this year. This is the very first Diwali where our boy is not physically present with us, as his duties and academic commitments have taken him away from home. It is a strange, quiet realization that leaves a noticeable void in our usual festival rush. However, we quickly reminded ourselves that celebrations cannot stop, and more importantly, our daughter is right here with us. She deserves our full presence, energy, and enthusiasm, and needs to be given equal importance in every single ritual and joyful moment.

Every year, we bring our stock from one particular wholesaler, and our routine has always been to drive down in the evening. This year, wanting to avoid the usual late-day rush, I thought it would be wiser to finish the task in the morning. However, when we arrived, we were greeted by a firmly closed shutter. I immediately called the owner, who informed me that they had been working tirelessly all night to organize stock and had only gone home to sleep in the wee hours of the morning, so the shop would not open until 12 noon. He kindly suggested that we try another area nearby where several smaller wholesalers were stationed, directing us to a specific known associate of his and telling us to use his reference.

Following his directions, we discovered a major shift in how things are being managed this year. The government has designated a section of a massive stadium specifically for this purpose, forcing all the seasonal cracker stalls to move into this single secure venue.

This centralized setup allows authorities to track all sales, curb the distribution of illegal, non-green fireworks, and impose heavy fines on violators. Earlier, anyone could open these temporary shops in any random, congested corner, posing an immense safety risk. Now, a government license is strictly mandatory. It is undeniably a fantastic move for public safety, given the inherent fire hazards associated with crackers, and seeing such a structured framework in place was reassuring.

When we located the recommended associate's shop inside the stadium complex, we were a bit disappointed to find their inventory quite limited, and the stock didn't really appeal to us. Weighing our options, we decided it was better to head back to our trusted regular wholesaler and wait out the time until noon. My best friend, who had accompanied us on the drive, decided he could not wait that long and left early. As the clock ticked closer to mid-day, a massive crowd of eager buyers slowly began to gather outside the shop, all waiting to explore the fresh arrivals.

The moment the doors finally swung open, we moved in quickly, systematically gathering everything our daughter needed before the rush became overwhelming. The billing counter took a bit of extra time as the crowd swelled, but in the end, the long wait proved entirely worth it. The wholesale pricing was a revelation, coming in at almost one-fifth of the printed MRP. If we had purchased the exact same quantity of crackers back at the retail shops near our residence, it easily would have cost us more than double the amount. Driving back home with a boot full of celebrations, we felt a deep sense of satisfaction. Traditions might require a bit more patience and adaptation as the years go by, but seeing the pure excitement and joy on our daughter's face makes every bit of the effort completely worthwhile. As we look forward to tomorrow evening, our focus is entirely on making sure her festival is just as magical, vibrant, and filled with light as it has always been.

I'm sorry your son isn't there to celebrate, but it's only for a season. I'm glad you were able to get a good price on the fireworks!
