OLD BUT YOUNG #258

Growing up, one of my mentors would always say “I have seen a 60 year old baby, and a 15 year old man”. Over time in the cause of dealing with people, I realized that statement to be very correct. The very first time I saw it in reality was during my very first job as an ICT personnel in 2020/2021. I was assisting a 30 year old graduate who still lived with his parents and was only working because his mother wouldn’t give him peace of mind. He has siblings who are all outside the country and doing well for themselves, but this guy has decided not to do anything and if it were left to him, he would stay at home and play videogames.

His attitude was very childlike, and so was his thinking. If he were to be a rational thinking, it would have been better, but he was someone who wouldn’t do anything he wasn’t told to do, working with him was like working with a child who you always need to train. One time I casually asked him if he was ever thinking of marriage, and to my amusement he said he’s too young for that. This got me thinking how on earth he was trained. A guy whose younger brothers wedding I attended, not that I’m putting marriage as a criteria, but he showed he wasn’t ready for life.

So yeah I believe that maturing is by choice. And no one can give the excuse that they were never taught because in growing up one of the things that happens is that people begin to assume that you know certain things or at least there is nothing stopping you from knowing them. And normally those who had childish dreams will be able to test those dreams, gain experience and mature into better dreams. For that friend of mine, I can’t seem to know why he never grew up at that time and why he had no future ambition as a man, but one thing was for sure, he was comfortable being a child as he would always run to mummy for anything (literally).
