EDUCATION IS THE KEY #288

I grew up being taught that Education is the key, thank God I never believed it for one bit. Life is full of different things, hardship that we never prayed for and a lot of other things in between. I got to observe early in life that education is not even the key to illiteracy, this made me wonder, if education isn’t the key to illiteracy, then what on earth is education the key to. I see a lot of people chase education so much that the only thing we are popularly ever told growing up is that we need to get good grades so we can get good jobs, but in the real sense, this is a very false narrative.

I was talking to my younger brother some months ago about what he plans to do after secondary school, and like every other student, said he can’t wait to enter the higher institution. I asked him if that was what he really needed, and I saw the confusion in his face. I told him a little about my experience in the higher institution and my experience in life generally and then he resolved that he would try to learn a skill to improve on himself so he can be a better person at the end of the day. I had to let my parents know that like me, school is not the end for everyone, there is life after school, and a lot of people do not enjoy life after school because the only thing they prepare for is life in school.

This is where you see people in a family struggling to send a child to school so that he can get a good job and help his siblings after school. But then they forget to ask the important questions, what if he doesn’t get a good paying job after school, or how long will it take a fresh graduate to get the experience they need to earn a good salary in the corporate world. This is why I do not believe Education is the key, rather I believe the right education is the key. Everybody should not be given the same kind of education. There are those who would succeed better if they learned a skill than if they went to college, there are those who do not need a masters degree but professional certification in a good field. Understanding one's self and knowing what you want out of life plus following that part is one of the many keys to succeeding.
