The holidays are over, the new year has begun. And daily life is slowly getting back on track. The Christmas decorations have been neatly tidied up and put away. The house now feels bare, as if it has removed its winter coat. Although I enjoy the coziness of twinkling lights and decorated Christmas trees every year, there is also something satisfying about a fresh, tidy start. Yesterday, the first snow of the year fell, beautiful to see, but at the same time very inconvenient. And so we were glad that it didn't stay. The rain that came down all day afterward was less so.
My partner left for work this morning with a fresh reluctance. After being home together for almost three weeks, the house suddenly feels empty and quiet without him. We have started our days wonderfully slowly the past few weeks: drinking coffee together and going over the day's plans. I'm going to miss those kinds of moments. They are those simple, everyday things that you only appreciate when they disappear again.
Skipper is also feeling a bit down. He has already had his morning walk and breakfast, but without his owner working outside, where he could be outside all day, he seems to wonder: “And what do I do now?” His solution? A nap. He is now stretched out on the couch, probably dreaming about the past few weeks in which he was the king of the backyard. My partner has spent most of his vacation expanding his workshop, so for Skipper there was lots of time outside.
His workshop was already bursting at the seams, and the purchase of a small thicknesser/planer made the space even smaller, and completely unworkable. So it was time for an upgrade. And so my partner spent most of his vacation doing carpentry, screwing and sawing. Certainly not a traditional vacation, but it made him happy. For him, his workshop is his playground. And who doesn’t want more space in their playground?
My planning was forced to pause during the vacation. With a long-haired dog in the house that always sheds a little, a vacuum cleaner is not a luxury, but a basic necessity. Only our vacuum cleaner saw it a little differently and decided to stop. Skipper was very happy with this decision of the vacuum cleaner, he finds it an unbearable monster. But because I can't do without it, we immediately ordered a new one, hoping to have it in the house before Christmas. Spoiler alert: that didn't happen.
New Year's Eve also passed without a vacuum cleaner. So armed with a broom, I did my best to get rid of the army of dog hairs. Fortunately, last Saturday finally came the deliverance: the new vacuum cleaner! And I have to admit, when I turned it on for the first time and went through the house, I almost felt... happy? Well, maybe not happy, but relieved. Vacuuming is still not my hobby, but with a device that works, it is at least no longer torture.
Now that the holidays are really over, and the daily cleaning is back to normal, the pyrography pen is patiently waiting for me. Because 2025 is all about starting projects with pyrography and painting. The woodworking shop outside also plays a big part in this. Even though it takes some getting used to the silence again, Skipper and I will fill our days.
As I write this, Skipper comes to me and puts his head on my lap. Maybe he wants to say: "Cheer up, it will be okay." It could also be that he is thinking about his next meal. In any case, we will soon go for the next walk in the mud. Now I will grab a cup of tea and think about how I am going to fill the rest of the day. Because despite the empty feeling after the holidays, there is always something beautiful in a fresh start.
Your first few paragraphs about Christmas holidays and going back to work 100 % sounds like us. I worked last Thursday already but then took off Friday again - just because. But today work will start for real.
I said 'will start' because I am trying again to get up earlier to get some art in before work starts and totally exhausts me. So that is what I am going to do now.
Enjoy the silence together with Skipper and happy New Year!
I did enjoy the silence, and it was even more silence than I had expected. My voice seems to be on holiday to tropical islands and left me behind to battle the winter storms and cold in The Netherlands. Lol!
Hopefully, you'll be able to share some beautiful creative art works later. Don't overload yourself though, and don't forget to enjoy the early creating part of your day. But also, don't forget to take enough rest ...
Happy New Year to you too!
Arghhhh everyone settling in their new routines again. For me that is the awefull phase as I am better with less routines and 'lets just see every day how we figure it out'.
But I get it..Doggo here also loves the routine and knowing that boss man is there every certain hour.
Curious what 2025 will bring you this year. Happy vacuming!!
It's not that I do love the routines so much, but since both lady and dog are blessed with some autistic traits, that routine is what gets us through the days the best. The new year will hopefully bring me assignments for "pet" animal portraits, painted or pyrographed. That is where my focus and my heart lies.
It's always nice to have those cozy stretches of time that seem to almost stand still in the moment. When that time is over, reality really does suck, lol! I had similar feelings as I never get a vacation from work, as I work Weds-Fri every week, all year long. There is no one who can do my job on staff at the small optical shop I work for, so hence, no real vacation for me. During Christmas and New years; well that's the longest stretch of time 6 days for Christmas off then back to work for 2, and 5 for New Year's, that I've had off in over 10 years of working for the doc! I really didn't want to go back, lol!
Yes, we will both get used to the 'old'/new routines, but it still sucks!
Thanks for sharing; take care and have a lovely day! !LADY

Oh, that doesn't sound great that you never really have a vacation. Then I understand very well that you didn't want to go back. A person really needs to unload now and then completely. I had a good day yesterday, my first pyrography piece of the year is almost finished. Today I'm burning the last detail in, and then I can put it in the oil. After that, I have to work on the website, because that has been on hold for a while, but that has to be picked up now. So enough plans.
I wish you a happy new year, and a great day, and take good care of yourself with enough rest alternating with activity. Even if you don't have a real vacation!
Thank you @hetty-rown for your thoughtful response. Take care! 🤗💜 !LADY

Skipper seems to know exactly how to lift your spirits! Whether he's ready for his next snack or just giving you some love, it's amazing how much a little tail-wag can do. Getting out for a walk in the mud sounds like fun, and that cup of tea is definitely a great way to start thinking about what's next, @hetty-rowan . Fresh starts can be exciting even if they follow a holiday lull, right?

You're absolutely right. Skipper does know exactly how to lift my spirits. He's a great dog to have around. He keeps me active, even during a cold, and the cup of tea lifted my spirits enough to start burning some wood again ... All in all, it was a good day, shaking off the holiday lull
I'm glad to hear that, especially that Skipper has been such a bright spot! Having a companion like that can really make a difference, especially when you're feeling under the weather. Staying active and enjoying a warm cup of tea sounds like it was just what you needed to get back into the groove. Cheers to both of you for shaking off the holiday lull and making each day count! 🌟
Sounds like a busy yet refreshing start to the year! I get how routines can feel empty after the holidays, but it’s nice to settle into new projects and fresh starts. Skipper’s backyard adventures made me smile
Hopefully, Skipper gets many more adventures to make you (and us) smile a lot.
The time spent with our loved ones during holidays leaves its marks on our heart, but then life is meant to move and we have to start with the routine again. The break makes the routine valuable and the routine makes the break worthwhile. So we value life more
Very wise words!
You got snow? None for me yet even as I have a set lightly used snow tires on my car. It's like an extended fall season here in western Canada. That's it, making a cup of Chamomile. Yum! 😋
We did get a bit of snow here from Saturday night until Sunday morning. It didn't stay, rain took it all away, but it was there. Mostly we're experiencing the extended fall season too in The Netherlands. Lots of rain and wind, and yesterday a storm ... perfect weather for the Chamomile. In my case, I love Chamomile, but right now I prefer a Hot Choc when I get back from walking Skipper!
Take care!
