Finding my True Driver (LOH Contest #252#)

Growing up as a girl child, I am motivated by rewards that I can see. Incentives like being rewarded with a biscuit for washing the plate or running family errands motivate me a lot. Therefore, I cherish staying with my Mum and sisters and helping with house chores to increase my chances of receiving this reward. Sometimes, too, my Mum, while cooking, will cut out small meat, fish or stockfish and throw the same inside my mouth for staying with her in the kitchen. Meanwhile, my other siblings will always disappear to the neighbourhood once we are back from school to play with other children. But I always lurk around my Mum, helping out with errands.

Then, growing up, I began to develop a passion for assisting people without any form of gratification. At the church, I always join in the packaging section after cooking to assist with the food packaging in every church event.

Furthermore, developing my career path, I rendered some volunteer work during my national youth service. Such volunteer work included crafting CVs, cover letters and preparing candidates for interviews free of charge. The major drive for this service is just the passion for seeing people win or be successful after interviews. Truly speaking, I am always happy receiving positive feedback from my friends and the people I serve.

I once had an encounter with a male client who had been applying for jobs without receiving feedback from the firms. He approached me through a friend and pleaded that I assist him with a CV and cover letter repackaging. He came back a few days after I delivered the job to him with an exclamation “ e dey workooo” meaning (it is working).

At this juncture, I realised that I also need some funds because of the growing need to develop and hone my skills for excellence. Even paying for certifications, I was running. Hence, the need for profit-making was conceived and implemented. I started adding cost to those services. However, positive feedback continued pouring in. Within a few months, my passion for merely assisting people transformed me into a full consultant rendering a lot of services, including full-cycle recruitment, CV and cover letter repackaging, statutory advice, etc.

At that point, I was done with my service, gained a full-time role, but was also running this venture as my side hustle. Not quite long, there was a clash of interest between my official deliverables and my side hustle. I sank into deep thoughts over it and decided that I need to be independent if I really want to make a living out of this venture. Again, I needed to have dedicated time to run my venture the way I feel.

I met with my Boss, and we had an honest conversation. After the meeting, it turned out to be a win-win situation because the firm did not lose me, nor did I. So, I had delegated days and time for the firm while the firm granted me two days of remote work with a timing of 8 am to 12 pm (WAT) in a week to meet up with my side hustle demands.

Conclusively, I will state that my different stages and levels of life have determined how I am motivated. While growing up, I was motivated by physical gifts. Mid-career, I started developing a passion for the things I do. This shifted my motivation to passion and finally independence.

Professionally, I see myself motivated by passion, while I need the profit to develop competencies for further assistance and independence to remain focused on my drive.

My passion for assisting people transcended from mere support to an independent profit-making venture, which is still being redefined by trends. I am not reneging; rather, I am hoping that one day, it will blossom into a business to reckon with in this dynamic environment.
