I was a Christian until 2018. Now I'm no longer a Christian and I do not have any religion whatsoever.
My philosophy/stand on these things is not really atheism, but more of Agnostic Atheism. Which is the stand that all religions and gods worshipped by men are just false and developed from superstition, but whether there is the existence of a god outside all these religions who created the world is unknown.
Before 2018 I was already having doubts about Christianity. I felt a lot of the stories were bizarre and a lot rules and things that the Bible God did didn't make any sense.
For example, I thought it didn't make any sense for God to punish everyone that would ever exist for the sins of Adam and Eve. I thought it was crazy that God hardened the heart of Pharaoh and punished him, the Egyptians and even the Israelites all because of the consequences of the hardened heart God hardened himself.
I thought God was to blame for Satan because he created him and didn't protect his beloved humans enough from him.
I thought it was just crazy that God let Job watch his family die, and all his livestock and all his wealth disappear just because of a bet with Satan.
Etc.
I thought all of these, but I was still a Christian. I wasn't yet able to say I'm out of the religion because of all these. Certainly my application of critical thinking to the religion was still ongoing and I had to allow time for more thinking because that is how I'd uncover enough reasons why I have to leave. Because obviously there are so many more reasons.
When I came across the main argument that led me away I realized that one of the main reasons I hadn't left Christianity was because I still had it ingrained in me that the Bible was the word of God, and that even though I could see all the holes and flaws I couldn't really fault it, because it was the word of God.
But when I came across the main argument that led me away I realized that this made no sense at all. The main argument was this: why do you take the Bible as the word of God? What reason do you have for that? Is it because the Bible said that it is the word of God? It is just like you saying the reason why you believe someone is a king is because they said they're a king. Simply making a claim does not mean you're saying the truth.
This was the argument I came across, and I didn't come up with it myself, it was on some post by a guy on Facebook.
It really blew my mind that I had never thought about it like that before. It was also kinda sad, I felt like a fool. But the consolation, though, is that the fact remains I was coming to that. I had only began applying critical thinking to religion recently, with time I was definitely going to uncover more.
But this person hastened it up for me by far and I was as grateful as I was mind blown. It was from that day that I quit being a Christian.
It just became so clear to me that the Bible was just a claim by the writers, and the claim had to be accepted or rejected on it's own merits.
One had to look at the claims, the reasons given, the sense made, etc. and judge it based on that.
Unfortunately I had already done that. All the things in the Bible I mentioned above that I had issues with shows that I had already analysed the content and deemed it unworthy. But I still held on to it, however loosely, because of what I thought the source of the content was.
But now I saw that there was no reason to accept that the supposed source was the actual source. It was just a claim. So judging the content by its own merits meant it had to be thrown away.
A perfect God, who is all wise and kind could not have done all those things I have issues with mentioned above.
So, there you have it. What were your own reasons, if this applies to you? If it doesn't apply to you what are your reasons for still being religious? Do you have a counter for my own reasons for leaving religion? 🌚

I’m mot agnostic, but if I were to walk that path, it would be because I just don’t believe a God that is so wise and powerful would allow all the suffering happening in the world continue, and still vow to punish people who he created to know no better, for not knowing better and following him.
