Cinetv Contest: The Relatable Friendship In "After 30" Review

I took a very short break from kdrama unintentionally, after I saw a trailer of this movie on a WhatsApp status. I've been seeing a lot of interesting movie trailers but today is the first day I decided to follow the provided link to watch one of their recommendations which turned out to be a good deviation from my lengthy fun kdrama lol.

A Nigerian movie, one about girls and friendship and a very relatable storyline, not because it has happened to me before but because I've seen it play out among girl friends a lot. I also think it's a perfect choice for the week's theme (friendship) although this movie is very far from my favourite.

"After 30" is a 2024 Nollywood movie that I personally think gives the vibe of an American movie "Girl's Trip" I saw some time ago but this time, with lots of relatable touches about what's in the real world among friends. Aside the parties and girls fun time, there's the side of life that require every person to own up to by themselves.

While that lead poster doesn't portray exactly what the movie is about, I think it's a good clickbait to get some people to see the movie especially because of the lady. I'm not too familiar with her but I definitely would love to see her again in another story. She had the best appearance and charisma for every scene to me.

The movie is about four best friends, who have their own stories before they turned 30 and after 30, they had to rewrite their stories whether to fight or run away from facing whatever comes. One finds love disgusting after losing a fiance to death, one is a big and won't focus on one man, one is married and the other, a soon to be gay.

I like that each friend gets a good screen time for viewers to understand each of them and their back story, although the character played by Tunbosun Aiyedehin had more screen time and it's totally fine. The friends showed in many scenes what it means to have close friends who care about you in whatever aspect of your life.

Their fallout showed how imperfect it can also be with having friends, everyday won't be about fun and all play. They shared secrets with each other, had their down moments and so it was expected that they would have a fallout to help them bond better as friends. What I can't forgive about their story is, the movie ended before they reconciled.

I know even if a movie didn't end as expected, there should be scenes that would have imagining possible ends to it without seeing an actual but this movie failed in giving viewers that. I think the four friends went through a too hard moment that it will be hard to reconcile and forget easily but it definitely taught new lessons.

There are some romance scenes in the story, the poster and trailer actually portrayed a good amount of it but I'll still say that wasn't the focus of this movie but how their friendship endured till it collapse for them to hopefully make amends behind the scenes, I guess. I like that they made us understand that they are friends who have achieved a lot on their own as career ladies at 30.

It's a good short movie about friendship, balancing careers, growth and challenging the norms in a society. There were a few annoying side of the story and as well as funny scenes that had me cracking up. In all, it was a good time for me away from my favourite kind of movies so I'll recommend. If I must rate it, then I'll give it 7/10.
