I have an honest love for historical movies, and I think I’ve said this before but I’m constantly looking forward to being immersed in one movie or series or the other when I can find good ones. There’s one I’m currently seeing, but I’ve barely had the time, so I’m only two episodes in. Anyway, I will be talking about another one I had the pleasure of seeing last week.
This war American drama film directed by Tyler Perry tells the story of families in the 1940s. It begins with a mother waiting in vain for news of her sons in the warfront, and then switches to Abram and Lena Derriecott. They have pretty much a forbidden relationship since she’s black and he’s Jewish, but he has been enlisted to go fight in the war, and promises to come court Lena properly on his return.
This never happens because he dies in the war, and broken hearted Lena enlists in the army after her graduation. Everything that happens from then on is the typical behaviour that would be expected when an all woman unit, that also happens to be black emerges. This film takes you on a hard but scintillating ride.
I was absolutely stunned seeing this kind of production coming from the Tyler Perry house. Somehow, a part of me had written off Tyler Perry productions, but this movie delivered in the best way possible, and I couldn’t barely find a fault. Barely.
I love the cast. And I think Kerry Washington was onto one of her best ever performances on screen with this. There is this raw emotion she gives into every role of hers, but this was just on another level. Every action and inaction, every quiver of her lips and shake od her head was tailored into eliciting and evoking the right emotions in the audience, and I can say for free that she did not miss the mark. Not by a long shot.
The other lead cast did okay, and seeing Oprah Winfrey didn't hurt. I had a little issue with the acting of Lena Derriecott played by Ebony Obsidian. I promise if if I hadn’t seen her stellar acting in Sistas, I would have ruled her out as a terrible actress. Maybe it’s just me but it really did feel like she was responding a millisecond too late, and her emotions and actions felt forced and unaligned. I really can’t place an exact finger on it, but I wasn’t taken by her acting at all, and since she was the lead character, it nearly ruined the whole movie experience for me.
This movie tests you. As a woman and a person of colour, you are brought into the harsh and bitter understanding of what people like me faced in a not too long ago time, and there are several instances in the movie where you’d wish they’d say something mean or right back, but then you come to the realization of how nearly impossible that was. It tests your ability to sit and not be filled with spite. And I’m glad I passed the test, seeing that the movie still turned out okay.
I will say that this is a very delightful movie. One that leaves you feeling good and basking in that warm glow that follows any well thought out heroic story. I’m certainly glad I got to see it. A 7/10 from me. Tyler Perry outdid himself. Looking forward to more of these types of movies.

I have loved every one of Tyler Perry's movies, and I wouldn't doubt this, too. I guess this movie would also be an emotional one for me, especially the part Abram had promised to come court Lena once he's back from the war, but never did. So painful. That was a nice review there.
Wow another Tyler Perry Master piece. I will definitely see this movie. Lovely review there girl🌺
Very interesting movie, I just watched it yesterday and was preparing a review.
It's a movie that would teach the power about the power of team work, sisterhood and determination.
Thanks for sharing.
I'll save this to watch, with your review it worth watching.
I haven't seen it but I'll check it out, thanks for sharing.
