I had the most amazing time recently. I keep saying that I barely have time to see movies anymore, and while this is true, the few times I see movies by some chance or the other, I relish every moment.
This day was no exception as a friend of mine suggested a movie to help me unwind after nearly pulling a study all-nighter. He said it was comedy, and I was locked in immediately because a chance to escape my reality even for a bit? Count me in. What I wasn’t prepared for was the kind of comedy that was about to unfold in front of me.
The fictional east African country of Wadiya has had Omar Aladeen as a dictator for many years, and when he dies, his son, Haffaz Aladeen, who is also a brutal dictator succeeds him. Aladeen proves himself to be worse than his father with his ludicrous beliefs about life. When the United Nations issue their final warning to him because of his dictatorship, he decides to go to New York City with his Uncle, Tamir.
What Aladeen is unaware of is the coup awaiting him right there in his hotel room, and staged by an easily guessable figure. With a dumb double now fronting to the world as him, Aladeen must find a way to return to his rightful place as the ruler of Wadiya, and possibly wreak havoc on the traitors?
Believe me when I say I didn’t know the right words to explain this plot to you all. You can’t give a narrative to this movie because nothing quite does it justice. The Dictator is comedy gold. A timeless comedy piece with almost nothing matching it.
I was not prepared for how heartily I would laugh while watching the scenes that can be described as unhinged as best. It’s the kind of movie that stays with you simply because of how incredibly and shamelessly bizarre it is. I didn’t know what I was expecting when I heard comedy, but it certainly wasn’t that. From the very first scene, I believe, I was already throwing my head back in laughter.
It makes a lot of sense that this movie was not created this year or sometime in the last few years where cancel culture has become the norm. I’m sure all the prudes of this era would absolutely shudder in revulsion if they saw a film like this. It has about hundred cancel-worthy scenes at the very least. But this is not the type of movie you take seriously, no matter how conservative you are. You take it as what it is, and enjoy every moment. Because enjoyment is indeed guaranteed.
I was more amazed when I found out that ninety percent of the scenes were improv. Like the lines were made up at the spot, and it’s hard to believe because every single line was a hit with zero misses. It goes to show just how brilliant the actors were, especially Sacha Baron Cohen who played the role of Aladeen. He had my heart with his comedic brilliance. The entire movie was comedy gold in its wholesome form, and even with all the jokes and excitement, it still has a lot of heart to it. Humourous but heart all the same.
If you’re in a terrible mood, or you’re looking for a movie to just laugh and hold your mouth in shock, The Dictator is the movie for you. You will love every moment, and it’s a guarantee. Giving this a solid 9/10. Minus one because of all the culture shock, lol. Will definitely see this in a few months time, and possibly relive the blissful moment. Because, why not?

I have been recommended this movie but I'm yet to watch it 😂
Oh, I so much love this movie.
Imagine doctors telling their patients "You are HIV Aladeen" and they don't know if they should laugh or cry because the dictator has decided to use his name for both positive and negative 😂😂😂😂
