Moon Lovers || Heartbreak for Dinner

This weekend has been quite eventful for a lot of reasons. And I didn’t think I could possibly do anything other than study and other college-related things, but I started on a new book and partly re-watched a series. A series I loved and hated in equal measure. And I’m happy to share that with you today.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016)

It’s a total solar eclipse and twenty five year old, Go Ha-Jin falls into water and is immediately transported to the year of 941 in the Goryeo period during the reign of King Taejo and in the body of Hae Soo.

Initially, she falls for the gentle, kind and soft spoken eighth prince, Wang Wook, but due to chance and several events, she ends up having a different kind of relationship with Wang So, the fearsome and somewhat outcast 4th prince. In an era that is laced with a lot of bloodshed, Ha-Jin unwittingly gets involved in the politics, ambition and love that ensue.

My Thoughts and Rating

How is it possible for you to enjoy the first half of a series so beautifully and then end up teary eyed and shocked at all the havoc that happens in the next half. This series had me on a chokehold. Let me honestly say that while re-watching this, I only saw the first half because why not? It was filled with fun, laughed and heart-stopping moments that would leave you giggling.

Another reason I knew I had to see this series again was because of Kang Ha-neul who is the 8th prince. While everyone was attracted to the 4th prince and the others, I was insanely drawn to the eighth prince. He’s such a looker and I enjoyed the moments when he was the good guy. Spoiler alert... He eventually becomes a bad guy, and it just kind of ruined things for me. But yeah, I was SAT when it came to scenes he was in.

The storyline of this series leaves you feeling with a myriad of emotions. When you laugh, you laugh hard and when you cry, you equally cry hard. The good moments leave you ecstatic and the bad moments are so heart-wrenching, you’ll have a hand on your mouth, and the other hand clutching you chest. It’s beautiful and you are guaranteed of a good time but there’s no mistaking that it is a whole lot.

Also, I think this is one of those series that made me know that historical K-dramas are where it’s at. You get a good plot and an amazing acting in contemporary dramas, but historical ones just take it to the next level in everything. Scintillating plot, pacing that is never drab, oscar-worthy acting, the whole shebang. We (K-drama fans) have been begging the producers of this film for a second season since the last one ended so unsatisfactorily. But as you can tell, that has not happened and may never happen seeing that nearly ten years have passed.

In conclusion, I doubt that you can claim to be a watcher of K-dramas if you haven’t seen this cinematic masterpiece. It’s a beauty and I’m glad I got to somewhat see it this weekend. A good 8.5/10. Should be more but they broke my heart too much.

The way this movie made you feel is the exact reason I don't watch K-drama. One minute, you are getting used to the plot and enjoying every scene; the next minute, you are hissing like a snake and just provoked as to how the whole thing will take another bend with a yeye plot twist.

@merit.ahama have you seen this??
