Ah, a timeless classic. If you are my age then this was a film you'd have grown up with in your youth. Indiana Jones. I was surprised I was allowed to watch it knowing that there was Nazi's and horror stuff at the end. But realistically parents didn't really protect us from adult scenes back when we were young, so we got to see everything in its glorious horror detail. Thankfully though, this was quite tame for its time.
The film starts off with a young adventurer, Indy, short for Indiana, an explorer, or so we think. He's dressed like an explorer, acts like an explorer, and is equipped with all the types of equipment he'd need.. as an explorer. We watch as he tries to break into an ancient tomb with traps and devices that could kill you if you make one false move.
But thankfully our dear Indy makes it to the precious artifact unscathed, and tries to guess the weight of it so that it doesn't trigger any trap door. But just as we think Indy has gotten away with it, all hell breaks loose and a massive wrecking ball comes down from the ceiling.
After what seems to be a lifetime of jumping through lots of traps, Indy finally makes it to the outside to which he is met by several natives all pointing their spears at him. He is relieved of his treasure and escapes via plane on the river.
Next we learn that Indy isn't an explorer, but a history professor at an esteemed American college. He just does exploring in his part time, and for when he wants to pick up ancient artifacts to study and bring home.
And thus is the beginning of a newfound series which spans across thirty years and at least 7 films. This one is the best though in my opinion because there seems like there is more meat to this film than in many of the others. There's just more travelling, more treasure, and more storyline.
In this first installment of the series we're met with Marion. A lovely girl, who I must admit I thought looked a bit like a man when I was a kid, but she really is pretty looking at her now when I'm in my 40's. I casn see why she was cast.
This is the start of a long fight with the Nazi's because if you're a fan of wartime history then you'll know that Hitler was crazy about the occult and was always trying to grab artifacts to advance his theories and wacky practices. So it turns out that Raiders of the lost ark, whilst fantasy, wasn't that far away from the truth!
But nevertheless, this is my favourite film of the series. Considering the Ark of the Covenant has always been one of my favourite stories from Christian literature. It has everything in it, from Nazi's, to lost artifacts, to hidden tombs. You'll definitely not be let down if you decide to give this one a watch.
Well worth it.
