Madame Webb

It was a Sunday evening, and I was looking for something light to watch. scrolled through Netflix and came across an interesting title, Madame Web. The name sounds familiar, but I still can't tell from where (till now). Bonus, it is a Marvel movie. But wait, it's a Marvel movie that was released in 2024, and for some reason, I never heard a single thing about it, and I'm just finding out it exists. Why is that?

PLOT

Cassandra Webb is just your average paramedic in New York City. Until one day, while rescuing someone from a car accident, she falls with the car into the bridge. Luckily, she is promptly rescued, but from that moment she starts to see moments into the future like Deja Vu.

After a series of events, she realises she could probably prevent bad things from happening. On a train, she saves some teenage girls' lives from a mysterious man, and from there, her whole life changes.

THOUGHTS

After watching this movie, I immediately understood why I had never heard of it before. The movie is mediocre at best.

First of all, the story seemed like a good one at the start, but as you progress, you find yourself asking "why does the story feel so half assed." Things just kept on happening, and there was no particular reason for those things. It just had a weird vibe. And then they kept bringing attention to connections that will end up not being announced.

Then the villain of the story. The acting of a large part of the characters was cringe, but of all the cringeworthy acting I watched, his cringeworthy acting was the cringiest. I kept asking myself why he was talking like he was trying to intentionally deepen his voice, and also, his dialogue was terrible. The writers made him seem dumb whenever he was talking. Seemed like a terribly written cartoon character.

Even the action and fight scenes you'd typically get from a superhero movie are not there. There's a little, but I'm not sure if it is worthy of being called that.

The actor choice was a bit iffy, particularly the teenagers. I found it hard to picture Sydney Sweeney and Isabela Merced as teenagers (I wonder why they put Sydney Sweeney as the good girl, though).

Other than these, the other areas of the movie were ok (The effects).

I will cut it small slack and say maybe it was made for a younger audience, but truthfully, I don't even see them watching this. It's no wonder the movie was a flop and no one spoke about it.

After watching it, I did some research on the Madame Webb character in the comic, and it feels like it could have been a good movie, but they just spoiled it with terrible acting and a terrible story. It could easily have been the first movie in an interesting franchise, but at this point, after such a monstrosity of a first part, it is looking very unlikely. I'll give this one a 4.5/10

I just re-watched this movie on Saturday as well so it's a bit surprising to find it here. ha ha.
Your comment on this is actually apt. But at the end of the day, I also concluded it was perhaps made for a younger audience because this very movie is one of my younger sister's favourites

Yeah you're right. With marvel doing a flush out of their old superheroes, most of these new heroes are for the next generation

I heard about this movie today. I think I should definitely watch it once.
But why did you give such low points?

You can give it a try. I mentioned all the reasons in the blog, it just feels half baked.
