It has been a while since I've watched a movie that I'd consider a blockbuster, but recently, I watched a movie that I'd consider worthy of the title. Action adventure, cinematic, great characters, fantasy and a lot more, I bring you Dune.
Paul's father, Leto Atreides, is given a new appointment by the emperor to go and take control of Arrakis, one of the powerhouse planets in terms of energy production, thanks to their precious resource called spice. The thing is, the Harkonnens who were in charge of Arrakis prior to the emperor's new appointment don't want to let go of the planet.
Chaos ensues, and Paul and his mother find themselves among refugees on Arrakis. The refugees speak of a Legend of the Lisan Al Ghaib (The messiah) who will deliver them from the hands of their oppressors. Paul starts to fit their descriptions. Could he be the messiah?
There's a lot more to the plot than mentioned (obviously), but this time there's a whole lot more. Even without being told, I could already tell this was an adaptation of a book, because the storyline was just so intertwined, and there's a lot going on that you know this must have taken several chapters in a book to be able to describe. I haven't read the book, so I can't compare how close it is to the book, but this alone is really good. The quality of the acting, the cinematic setups, the combat and everything in between is so realistic, you just know they spent a lot of money on this (165 million dollars). The good thing is it didn't flop.
But then let's get to some of the things I didn't like. Keep in mind, this is only a review of the first part. The length of the movie. I know it is supposed to be long since it is a movie adaptation of a lengthy book, but it just felt like the movie was too long (2 hours and 30 minutes). At some point, my attention was swaying until something significant happened and brought me back to full attention. Perhaps there'd be more time to build up the story if it were a series instead of a movie. My second issue also relates to the first, the fact that they didn't delve deep enough into the visions he was having. Perhaps it is better explained in the book. There'd definitely be able to delve into it well if it were a series.
Other than that, it was a good watch. I would definitely recommend it to any lover of fantasy and adventure, and sci-fi. And I'd give it a rating of 7/10.
