M3GAN (thee robot, not stallion)

Before I begin this review, let me just make it clear that I am not a fan of horror movies at all. Not in any way. As a matter of fact, I think it’s more torture than fun to watch them. A movie makes my pulse go from normal to probably 150? Well, that’s not my way of fun. But sometimes, I make exceptions, and when I do, I watch them with no sound. I figured if the eerie sound is what makes me scared, then why not watch without it?

So I watched M3GAN and oh boy. I think everyone who has a “thing” for AI should also watch it. When I heard of the movie, it reminded me of my robotics days in senior high school and how a robot I programmed ended up doing things I didn’t add to the programme.

Just like what happened to me, except that mine didn’t harm me, MEGAN is 2023 horror/sci-fi movie about a robot that was built with the help of AI to act as a companion for kids but ended up causing so much harm. And by so much harm, I mean killing people.

The robot was built and programmed by a little girl’s aunt. She lost her parents in an accident and was sent to her aunt’s house for her to take care of her but because she was too busy with her tech job, she also put her niece under the care of a robot named Megan.

Megan’s job was to detect the little girl’s mood and make sure to be there for her. So as time went by, she started noticing that certain people(threats) made her sad and as a machine, the first thing that came to mind was to eliminate such threats hence, the killing spree.

I really loved the storyline. It wasn’t too much and it wasn’t too less as well. It was just alright for a normal horror/sci-fi movie. Although, most things were predictable, they were also enjoyable. You would know that this is coming to happen and then it actually happens and then it gets all your attention.

Let’s talk about the acting. You see how you know actors are good when they get you in your feelings? Make you angry or sad or happy? I believe that’s exactly what the little girl did. She played the role so well that I got angry several times for things she did, forgetting it’s just a movie.

Of course, the cinematography was great. Although I’m not a fan of horror movies, I’m yet to see any horror movie with bad cinematography. So yeah, 10/10 for the cinematography.

I love the lessons in this movie. How it makes you think that it’s okay to use AI and then just drops your expectations and makes you know that it could be equally harmful when not used well. My favorite realization in this movie is that humans will always be superior. AI can and is best used as a helper when it comes to taking care of people. The moment you let it fully replace another human, the probability that there’s going to be a catastrophe is almost 1. 7/10 for M3GAN thee robot!
