xAI acquired X for 45 billion in an all-stock transaction. Smart move?

xAI hat X für 45 Milliarden Dollar (inkl. Schulden) in einer reinen Aktien-Transaktion übernommen. Smarter Move?

Dass X, das seit der Übernahme mit Musk trotz massiven Sparkurs, nicht profitabel ist und irgendwann verkauft werden muss, war für mich ganz klar. Dass X jetzt von einer anderen Musk-Firma übernommen wird, ist doch eine kleine Überraschung, macht aber meiner Meinung nach auf den zweiten Blick durchaus Sinn.

Denke, die Transaktion hat mehrere Vorteile. Erstens steigen die Miteigentümer von X (Binance, Oracle Cofounder Larry Ellison, Saudi-Prinz Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, Sequoia, Qatar Holding) und auch Musk ganz gut aus, da sie jetzt um den ursprünglichen Kaufpreis von Twitter Anteile an xAI erhalten.

Musk bleibt damit hauptsächlicher Eigentümer von X und xAI.

Die finanzielle Situation von X ist zumindest solange der KI-Hype anhält, entschärft, da xAI leichter an VC-Kapital kommen kann als X. Davon könnte jetzt auch X profitieren. Es könnte zu einer Quersubventionierung von X durch xAI-Kapitalgeber kommen.

Und es gibt nicht zuletzt auch tatsächliche Synergieeffekte. xAI kann so wie bisher den gesamten Datenbestand von Twitter/X für das Training von Grok verwenden. Eine Goldgrube für xAI.

Der Merger macht also durchaus Sinn und ist ein genialer Schachzug von Musk. Aber es gibt auch Risiken. Durch die Übernahme steigt das finanzielle Risiko von xAI, das derzeit intern mit 80 Milliarden bewertet wird, mehr als Anthropic mit 60 Milliarden.

Sollte der KI-Hype crashen könnte X und xAI vor noch größeren Finanzproblemen stehen als jetzt, da es im Moment sehr schwer ist, Foundation-Modelle zu monetarisieren.

Was sagt ihr zur Übernahme? Denkt ihr, dass xAI mit X profitabel werden kann oder ist es nur ein Trick, um X vor dem Bankrott zu bewahren?

It was quite clear that X, which has not been profitable since the takeover by Elon Musk despite massive cost-cutting measures, would have to be sold at some point in time. But the fact that it is now taken over by another Musk company is a bit of a surprise, but in my opinion it makes perfect sense at second glance.

I think the transaction has several advantages. Firstly, the co-owners of X (Binance, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, Saudi Prince Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud, Sequoia, Qatar Holding) and Musk are getting out quite well, as they are now receiving shares in xAI for the original purchase price of Twitter.

Musk thus remains the main owner of X and xAI.

The financial situation of X has been alleviated, at least as long as the AI hype continues, as xAI can obtain VC capital much more easily than X. X could now also benefit from this. X could be cross-subsidized by xAI investors.

And last but not least, there are also actual synergy effects. As before, xAI can use the entire Twitter/X database to train Grok. A goldmine for xAI.

The merger therefore makes perfect sense and is a brilliant move by Musk. But there are also risks. The takeover increases the financial risk of xAI, which is currently valued internally at 80 billion, more than Anthropic at 60 billion.

If the AI hype crashes, X and xAI could face even greater financial problems than they do now, as it is currently very difficult to monetize foundation models.
