What is the Dead Internet Theory? AI killing the World Wide Web?

Die Dead Internet Theory kursiert bereits seit einigen Jahren (circa 2021) im Internet und besagt, dass das Internet heutzutage von Bots und AI-generierten Content geprägt ist und damit aussterben wird. Ursprünglich wurde sie als Verschwörungstheorie abgetan.

Im Zuge der rasanten KI-Entwicklung hat die Hypothese aber wieder neuen Wind bekommen und mittlerweile glauben immer mehr, dass das Internet, so wie wir es kennen, tatsächlich aussterben könnte.

Mit Internet ist eigentlich das www (World Wide Web) gemeint, hauptsächlich News-Seiten, Blogs und Howto-Seiten. Internet und das Web wird vom Mainstream oft synonym gebraucht.

Also das Internet (die Netzwerktechnologie) wird auf keinen Fall aussterben, auch nicht das gesamte Web, Web Apps wie Amazon, Uber oder Social Media werden mit ziemlicher Sicherheit nicht so schnell aussterben.

Was aber gemeint ist, ist dass Suchmaschinen zunehmend KI-generierte Antworten liefern, diesen Trend hat ironischerweise Microsoft mit der aggressiven Integration von AI in Bing ins Rollen gebracht.

Mittlerweile hat auch Google im KI-Bereich aufgeholt und baut seine Suchmaschine ebenfalls Richtung KI um.

Falls man die meisten Antworten aber bereits mit KI bekommt, wird die Notwendigkeit externe Websites, Blogs und Nachrichten-Portale nach brauchbaren Informationen abzugrasen immer geringer. Die KI liefert praktischerweise oft gute Zusammenfassungen mehrerer Quellen. Darin sind die heutigen KIs wirklich gut.

Wenn aber immer mehr User von der klassischen Web-Suche auf die KI-Suche (Deep Search) umsteigen, bedeutet das, dass der Traffic auf viele Websites einbrechen wird.

Weniger Traffic bedeutet wiederum weniger Werbeeinnahmen und irgendwann macht es dann gar keinen Sinn mehr, Content im Internet zu veröffentlichen, da die KI ohnehin schon alles weiß bzw. generieren kann.

Content-basierte Webseiten würden langsam aussterben. So die Theorie.

Was sagt ihr dazu? Denkt ihr, dass an der Dead Internet Theory etwas Wahres dran ist? Verwendet ihr KI bereits für Suchanfragen, anstatt mühsam die Informationen aus den ursprünglichen Websites zusammenzusuchen?

The Dead Internet Theory has been circulating on the internet for several years (approx. 2021) and states that the internet is now dominated by bots and AI-generated content and will therefore die out eventually. It was originally dismissed as a conspiracy theory.

However, in the wake of rapid AI development, the hypothesis has been gathering new steam and more and more people now believe that the internet as we know it could actually die out.

The Internet actually refers to the www (World Wide Web), mainly news sites, blogs and how-to pages. Internet and the web are often used synonymously by the mainstream.

So the internet (the network technology) will definitely not die out, nor will the entire web, web apps like Amazon, Uber or social media will almost certainly not die out any time soon.

What is meant, however, is that search engines are increasingly providing AI-generated answers. Ironically, Microsoft started this trend with the aggressive integration of AI in Bing.

In the meantime, Google has also caught up in the AI and is also rebuilding its search engine more towards AI as well.

However, if you already get most answers with AI, the need to search external websites, blogs and news portals for useful information becomes less and less. Conveniently, AI often provides good summaries of many sources. Today's AIs are really good at this.

However, if more and more users switch from traditional web search to AI search (deep search), this means that traffic to many websites will plummet.

Less traffic in turn means less advertising revenue and at some point it will no longer make sense to publish content on the internet, as the AI already knows or can generate everything anyway.

Content-based websites would slowly die out. That's the theory.
