Trump tells inner circle that Musk will leave DOGE soon. Tesla -42% YTD. Consequences for DOGE (government efficiency).

(edited)

Was denkt ihr?

Trump’s economic team faces flood of tariff critiques — even from top White House allies

News that almost got lost in the tariff war. It looks like Elon Musk is preparing his withdrawal from DOGE and US politics.

Tesla shares are down -42% since the beginning of the year, even more than Bitcoin (YTD -15%).

Fear that without Musk, DOGE's spending cuts will come to a halt. DOGE has only just started working and would really need to comb through all US agencies for inefficiencies, USAID alone is not enough. DOGE would have years of work ahead of it. Without a strong personality, it will be very difficult to fight the internal bureaucracy. That won't make you any friends in the administration either.

On the other hand, I think it's problematic if one is the CEO of several companies at the same time, as is the case with Musk. This inevitably leads to conflicts of interest and one also alienate one's own corporate customers with controversial activities, who may no longer buy Tesla cars because of the political involvement of Musk. Internationally, too, there has been a huge slump in sales since Musk has been working for Trump.

The current tariff war is making the situation even worse. According to a report, there have even been considerable disagreements between Trump and Musk over tariff issues.

What do you think? Will Musk actually withdraw from US politics and DOGE, or could things look very different again in a few days? Everything is pretty chaotic and volatile at the moment.

Its not feasible for Musk to both work to give Trump and try to do whats best for his companies. Its not aligned and the tariff thing showcase it clearly. Musk would prefare no tariffs

Politicians are the faces the rich put on so they can get their faces kicked in and come clean. They keep changing them from time to time to keep the people entertained.
What doesn't Musk understand? He should read Machiavelli.

Good point, usually billionaires install their faces to both have influence but also to not be directly associated with politics.

He will start minding his own business in the first place. Tesla customers (even the possible ones) are not really Trump supporters, and they simply go for its competitors instead. Not in the US only - in Canada, the EU... The more Musk engages with Trump, the less sales will Tesla have - simple math.

The new American administration is very erratic, so anything can happen.

Hmm so many things are happening in this current political administration but I think Musk has come too far to withdraw

With how things are currently going in the US, anything can happen. I wouldn't be surprised if Musk steps down from his current position since it seems to have caused at least some problems for Tesla.
However, I doubt that it is the last we hear from him. He will definitely try to influence politics in some way in the future.

Conflict of interest has hit Elon in the butt for months this year, vandalization to stock dropping to almost half. He certainly has to step down for the good of the other companies. However, whoever will take his place is going to have to be someone with strong will, it's not easy dealing with the backlash of making government efficient

I don't think he will, no. He's much too savvy a businessman to have gone into politics on a whim and get outed at the first tidal turn. Rather, it's suspicious to me how much focus has gone lately into this whole "Trump vs Elon" debacle. Articles on politics are starting to read more like a celeb gossip column, with Trump and Elon as the public's favorite "power couple" to air their dirty laundry in public. Except, are they really, or is it just hearsay, meant to keep the public entertained? Reports and "source says" are pretty much the equivalent of celeb gossip dirt-dishing " close friends". Personally, I'm doubtful of anything that seems to pique public gossip so.

We need to beware news articles that appeal too much to our own personal egos. In the sense that I've seen a lot of people talking about how Elon's f-ing himself over, ruining his businesses, etc., essentially weighing in on how the richest man on the planet should be conducting his affairs. It's an ego trip, to suggest I know better what's best for Tesla than Musk himself. Most of us don't reach that far. If we did, it would be us owning Tesla, methinks.

That being said, anything can happen. It's a damn crazy world.

I don't think so, it was a good move to create DOGE, and now he sees the consequences.

With the chaotic situation that had arisen with Trump tasking the whole world, nothing seems settled now..Doge has a future and I do hope that Elon won’t step down as this may had a drastic turnout for DOGE

I think the status of the market would become more volatile and chaotic after this update

I think he will leave eventually, but I don't think it will anytime soon. Once it gets into things that Elon might be involved in, he will have done his job, and I think he will leave then. Then again, I am not sure what they will do.
