How much does a self-service coffee cost in an Austrian Railways (ÖBB) train? (May 2026)

Früher gab es in vielen ÖBB-Zügen ein eigenes Board-Service, das Kaffee und Snacks im Zug bis zum Sitzplatz serviert hat. Das gibt es aus Kostengründen schon lange nicht mehr, aber dafür neue Self-Service-Automaten, wie in diesem Doppelstock-Zug der ÖBB.

Jetzt haltet euch fest, ein Self-Service Cappuccino im Papier/Plastikbecher kostet bereits 4.20 Euro, fast so viel wie bei Starbucks, eine 0.5L Cola-Plastikflasche ebenfalls 4.20, ein Cafe Americano 4.10 und ein kleiner Espresso 3.00 Euro.

Ist heftig, bei der Konkurrenz, in den Zügen der Westbahn bekommt man einen Kaffee kostenlos, wenn man sich mit der App selber eincheckt.

In the past, many Austrian ÖBB trains had their own onboard service that served coffee and snacks right to your seat. That service was discontinued long ago for cost reasons, but it has been replaced by new self-service vending machines, like the ones on this ÖBB double-decker train.

Now hold on to your hats: a self-service cappuccino in a to-go paper/plastic cup already costs 4.20 euros, almost as much as at Starbucks, a 0.5L plastic bottle of Coke is also 4.20, a café americano is 4.10, and a small espresso is 3.00 euros.

That’s steep, especially compared to the competition, on Westbahn trains, you get a free coffee if you check in yourself using the app.
