Food is one of my favourite pastimes and I take a gazillion and one pictures of it, yet for some reason I rarely write about it. Today though I shall tell you about what we had a wee while ago as I can still taste it on my lips! Yes, it was that good.
This post has been in my drafts for several months now, but after seeing the Japanese food this morning from Super Eli @coquicoin in her post Tres Guerreros. Trying craft beers in Bogotá. I thought the time is now!
It was the birthday of Mrs T, so we decided to pop out and have a pub lunch. Actually, there was an ulterior motive as I had to do a mystery shop in this pub and check out how they were serving two pints of beer(one of those you can check out Leffe Blonde wins over Mrs T.
Sometimes you feel as if you are in an old fashioned library as opposed to a pub with all the books everywhere.
I was looking in the menu when something caught my eye.
What on earth was that?
I have to confess to not being a Japanese food lover due to an incident in London many years ago.
Being a researcher tho, out came the phone, nonsense it was out already taking these pictures, and a quick internet search on Katsu curry convinced me it was not some kind of raw sushi and I was good to go!
The choices were Quorn and chicken, so as I am allergic to soya, chicken it was. And chicken seemed to appeal to Mrs T too!
The drinks were brought, Coke for Mrs T and beers for me, I did say I had to perform a mystery shop and a pint of Leffe and a pint of Corona were part of shop!
Work smart and get paid for something you enjoy I say!
The front of the menu did tell you that you were in the The Robert Nairn pub in Kirkcaldy in Scotland.
The Robert Nairn building actually used to be a TSB bank but the food and drinks company Wetherspoons bought it and made it into a pub. It is probably the only chain I frequent of any sort!
The picture of the pub exterior shows you gloomy our summer was last year!
They have a few outdoors tables, but the only people outside were smokers having a quick fag (cigarette) before they go inside!
Taken from Our History in their app
This pub is named after a member of the Nairn family, helping to put Kirkcaldy on the map. In 1847, Michael Nairn started a floor-covering factory. He was so successful that others set up similar businesses, and Kirkcaldy became renowned as the ‘linoleum centre of the world’. One of the Nairn’s many gifts to the town included the land (donated by Robert Nairn) to build the Trustees Savings Bank (TSB) – now this Wetherspoon pub.
Actually the food comes really quick, normally in ten minutes or so.
What do you think?
It looked appealing to me.
There is something about a red chilli pepper whether it is finger chilli or a chilli like this that I just find so colourful and appealing!
This shows you the mild Japanese-style katsu curry sauce also the sliced red chilli and what always sells to me is fresh coriander...
Coriander is our favourite herb, so much so I am going to start growing it indoors!
I like rice, I am not in the rice is life category but over the years I have decided that white rice is what I like. No pilar rice or basmati or hoohaa rice, I like boiled or steamed rice.
This though was their coconut-flavoured rice.
It was good and complimented the curry.
This was what I gleaned from wikipedia, I thought what this is chicken not pork, until I read chicken could be subsituted!
Katsu curry (Japanese: カツカレー, romanized: katsukarē) is a Japanese dish consisting of a pork cutlet (tonkatsu) served with a portion of Japanese rice and curry. It is served on a large plate and is typically eaten using a spoon or fork. The cutlet is usually precut into strips, eliminating the need for a knife.
Generally eaten as a main course, the dish can be accompanied with water or miso soup. In Japan, there are fast-food restaurant chains which specialize in serving katsu curry, with varying meats and types of curry. The pork cutlet can be substituted with chicken.
Someone loves my roast chicken and mashed potatoes.
But being summer I don't cook roasts, out of habit I don't use the oven.
Living in so many hot countries you learn to keep cool. Putting the oven on for two hours or so was only for special occasions!
They advertise as a half chicken, but I think they must have little breeds of chicken.
It was cooked to perfection though.
I was told to show you the gravy!
Someone loves good gravy and is very OCD where she puts it!
Me, well I put it everywhere, I am not fussy, I like it all over my food!
Every last drop was used!
Can you guess who chose what?
First up ice cream, apple crumble and fresh sliced strawberries...
It was fluffing fantastic. Do you share desserts?
I know I always do, but of course if you know me, then you know that I will virtually always choose something with ....
... yes chocolate!
Value for money 10/10
Speed of service 10/10
Food temperature 10/10
Food taste 10/10
Yep on this occasion the food was superb, and in this crazy time of cost of living going through the roof it was worth every penny!

Magic cheers!
Awesome, thank you!
Their serving of the katsu curry seems to be little only, or maybe it's just how I perceived it in the photos?
I don't think I've seen curry here using coriander but it adds something to the dish, color and flavor or smell? 😅 I'm not a fan of coriander though, ohhhh how can you be a fan of it?
I would get the roast chicken though! It looks appealing!
hehe the fresh coriander was for garnishing, there was none cooked in the dish.
As for the portion size, the roast chicken did win, although they are large plates!
hehe how can you NOT be a fan of coriander 🤣
I don't know too! Maybe some kind of past trauma 😂
If it's just for garnishing, it's fine... probably.....
Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Brilliant, cheers
Never tried japanese curry, only Thai and Filipino styles..but this looks enticing..
Not as spicy as my favourite Thai curries. But it was as good as it looked enticing!
I just noticed in the menu that they really put kcal on every dish 🤔
Anyways the place looks awesome, same eith the foods. I also want to try that Katsu Curry, but I feel like there's a lot of spices and flavors in it, but it is mild so maybe it's not that strong. But well, you enjoy it so much so for sure it taste really good. And, so your water is the beer no? Haha perfect pair eith the dish you chose.
haha yeah alot of places put kcal now on their menus, not that I pay attention haha!
You would like the curry because it was mild, not much spicy hot at all. It was tasty though.
Yes I had both beers, err I mean water!

Thanks Steve, although the beers were a wee bit more than £2.34!
Each plate looks tantalizingly good, food is to nourish why not make it a pleasure to enjoy at the same time....
Difficult to say which was the best, one thing is mash and peas must have gravy not on my meat though I enjoy using fingers with chicken!
!BEER
I don't mind gravyless meat as long as the meat is not overcooked!
Yes tantalizing food needs to be enjoyed,am with you there Joan!
My steak must still be pink and juicy... Chicken and pork cooked all the way through nothing worse than not properly prepared. Veggies in harmony with whatever is on the plate.

BEER
from @joanstewart for you. Enjoy it!Did you know that
Westherspoons have some very nice properties, and if you're not looking for gourmet Michelin standard they offer very good value meals. That said, the two chicken dishes looked very nice.
Have you joined those mystery shopper schemes? How's it working out?
Yeah I like how they rescue some older buildings. That pub is actually a mystery shop. I am in a couple of sites but I only do two shops so to speak as I go there normally, this being one of them!
After seeing the curry dish my mouth is watering as it has been forever since I had any. I may just have to find a good recipe and make some soon.
Oh I hope you made a curry! Yeah now I think I should make one too!
Hello friend, what a good option you were able to research and choose, it really looks very delicious, curry is always a good option to choose from, of course depending on taste and each palate. The interesting thing is the place and the entire gastronomic experience that I imagine it offers you. Greetings and thanks for sharing.
Thank you, it was a pleasant surprise to see it on the menu, and it really did taste as good as it looked!

Ñam ñam! That curry looks delicious! I've never tasted Japanese curry, to be honest, I wonder if it has a different touch than Indian or Thai curry dishes. By the way, I had a chicken curry with coconut milk for lunch yesterday, hehe.
Have a wonderful Tuesday, Super Ed!
Aha Super Eli it will have been similar to the japanese curry as it came with coconut flavoured rice!
So you had a chicken curry Super Eli and I got no invitation ....
I am teasing have a wonderful Wednesday when you wake Super Eli 💙
First of all Yum!
Second of all, hello young man!
