Along with the Superbowl and the start of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, last weekend was also the opening weekend of college softball. While my wife and I were hoping to attend the first few games of the Radford University season, I think we all know that didn't work out by now. Instead, Radford took the weekend to get some more practice in and get ready for this coming weekend.
Meanwhile, other teams were pretty busy getting their first games of the year in and there were some pretty amazing upsets in the power conferences that I am going to highlight here.
Things actually kicked off on Thursday of last week with something like sixteen games in the top 25.
Hats off to number 20 Virginia Tech which is actually just about 15 minutes down the road from Radford University. They took down number 13 South Carolina in their opening game 8 to 4. Then on Thursday we also saw Cal State Fullerton take down number 24 Ole Miss 5 to 4. However, in their second game, Ole Miss came back and got their vengeance 11 to 9.
Number 18 Stanford had a really close game against number 19 Oklahoma State 4 to 2.
On Friday there was a massive 37 games in the top 25, but you have to remember many of these teams are playing in tournaments this early in the season and it isn't uncommon for them to have double headers or multiple games in a single day.
Boston University got the upsets kicked off with a 2 to 1 win over number 16 Duke. Then, number 15 Clemson took down number 6 Oregon 6 to 5. Boise State continued the roll with a 3 to 2 win over number 24 Ole Miss and then number 21 Arizona had a stunning 11 to 6 victory over number 3 Oklahoma.
Saturday gave us another mess of games in the top 25. Number 25 Virginia took down number 8 Arkansas 4 to 2, and then Auburn upended number 15 Clemson 10 to 5. Number 9 Nebraska had a huge win over number 1 Texas 8 to 5 and number 20 Virginia took down number 13 South Carolina 8 to 5.
Then on Sunday there was another host of games. Southern Louisiana had a nice upset over number 6 Oregon 4 to 2, Michigan State took down number 15 Clemson 5 to 2, and number 22 Washington bested number 9 Nebraska 3 to 2.
Belmont got a win over number 17 Georgia 2 to 1 in the last upset victory of the weekend.
Tuesday there were another four games in the top 25 with none of them being an upset. In fact, they were all pretty lopsided cupcake games.
Last night there was only one game in the top 25 and that also was not an upset.
Things get started today with ten games in the top 25. Now that I have an ESPN+ subscription, I will probably be paying a lot more attention to the live games.
