We are officially less than a month away from the Winter Olympic games. I kind of lost track and after doing a quick Google search, I discovered they start on February 6th. Which is just two days before the Superbowl. Thankfully we won't have to worry too much about the overlap there. I remember a time when I was all about the Winter Olympics. Specifically the figure skating competition. Katarina Witt was my absolute favorite even though she wasn't on the American team.
I also remember I had a bit of a crush on Oksana Baiul back in the day. She started off kind of goofy looking, but ended up getting pretty cute. Not that looks are all that matter. You just have to remember I was a senior in high school, so there were certain things taking up the majority of space in my head at that time.
Anyway, these days I couldn't tell you a single person on the figure skating team. I've started to become more fond of other sports in the games like the ski jumping, downhill skiing, the cross country thing where they shoot a rifle, and speed skating.
Oh yeah, luge and bobsled. Those are always fun too!
Hopefully they start to show more of the freestyle aerials too. Those have always been so interesting to me, but they often get very little attention in the coverage. Especially now that snowboarding and things like the half pipe have become increasingly popular.
Of course, I will be happy to watch a little bit of ice hockey as well, but it is kind of funny that we don't have more teams sports in the Winter Olympics like we do in the Summer games. Sure, there are teams of country members, but when you consider the summer games have basketball, softball, baseball, handball, soccer, rugby, lacrosse, field hockey, etc. It's kind of weird that there aren't more team sports in the Winter games.
I guess it just has to do with the weather and the sort of stuff that people normally play. You know what would be cool... If they had an ice fishing event in the Winter Games. I'd watch that for sure. If you have never been ice fishing, you are really missing out, believe me!
Nevertheless, I am still pretty excited about the Winter games. There is a good chance I will have them playing pretty much all day in my office as I go about my work. It feels like this could be a really exciting year.
What is your favorite Winter Olympic event? Are you planning on watching a lot of the games this year? I look forward to hearing all about it in the comments!

I am looking forward to that also. There are more team events at the winter olympics. Curling for instance. Then there are team events in speed skating, shortrack, biathlon and even ski jumping. But those sports also are played individually.
I am a fan of skiing, the snowboard and ski cross, biathlon and always amazed by the ski jumping. Watching Curling can be so relaxing :) Love to see the people sweep the ice.
Besides curling and ice hockey, I have no clue if there real other winter team sports.
We, as Belgium, are trying to get cyclocross on the agenda of the winter olympics (our only shot at a medalle) but this also can be done without snow, so they don't want to add it :(
I do think that we have some contenders for a medalle in short track, the men's mass-start at speed skating, maybe skeleton (crazy what they do) or figure skating.
We have a curling center down the road from where I live. I think they offer classes from time to time for people that are interested in learning. That is true, while those sports are team sports I don't feel they have the same dynamic as a sport like ice hockey. I also wouldn't compare swimming to water polo in the Summer Olympics even though they are both team sports.
Fair points.
