With my weekend totally blow to hell, I have a bit of reworking to do for my rest of the week plans. I'll give a bit more detail about my trip tomorrow since it all revolves around softball. Today however, I am going to talk mainly about basketball. In case you missed it, March is less than 30 days away. That means before we know it, we are going to be smack in the middle of the NCAA tournament. I think it is possible it will be one of the most exciting tournaments we have ever seen this year. I also think that the Big Ten is going to come out strong and finally shut up some of those SEC and ACC teams that seem to think our conference is somehow "less than".
It's been about two years since Nebraska has been in the NCAA tournament and before that it was ten years back in 2014. Sadly though, despite their 8 appearances in the big dance, they have never won a game in the tournament. I have a feeling this year is going to be the exception for them.
We still have a little ways to go before we get there though. I think when we left off we had covered the scores from Tuesday of last week. Wednesday night there were three games in the top 25, none of them were upsets.
Thursday there were only two games in the top 25, and both of those were not upsets either.
Friday, we had another two games in the top 25, and as I talked about yesterday, Michigan State wasn't able to overcome Michigan at home and ended up losing 83 to 71. Meanwhile, number 21 Saint Louis had a huge 102 to 71 win over Dayton.
With no college football on Saturday, that left us plenty of time for the fourteen top 25 games that were on the schedule. Believe it or not, there were only two upsets on Saturday. The first was a 90 to 82 win by number 14 Kansas over number 13 BYU. Then Kentucky took down number 15 Arkansas 85 to 77.
I was actually expecting a lot more surprises from so many games, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
Sunday there were only four games in the top 25 and only one of them were upsets. In a fantastic show, number 9 Illinois took down number 5 Nebraska 78 to 69. I don't think this impacts the Cornhuskers chances of making it to the tournament too much, but it does give a bit more credit to Illinois who has kind of been flying under the radar in the Big Ten this season with all the hype focusing on Michigan and Nebraska.
I wouldn't sleep on the Illini...
Finally, last night we had two games in the top 25. Once again, neither of them were upsets, but number 11 Kansas did have a close call against number 13 Texas Tech. The Jayhawks were able to come away with the win 64 to 61, but it looks like it was a really good game.
We are just a few days away from the Winter Olympic games now, so I am going to be busy despite my change in plans. Check back tomorrow for more news from the college softball world!
