Today I would like to talk to you about a new thing I started working on in my journey with Homesteading which is growing onions As I mentioned before I love the idea of relying on myself in growing food and I think that onions are one of the best crops you can start with because they are not only easy to grow but also very useful and available in every home.
Regarding the requirements for planting onions the first important thing is the soil Onions need welldrained soil meaning that it is not too clayey and retains water excessively and not completely sandy so that it does not retain any moisture There must be a balance so that the roots can grow healthily.
The second point is exposure to sunlight onions need at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow well This is an important point because if the sun is low the crop will not be of the required quality As I mentioned to you I like to follow up on my plants and see the effect of conditions on them and I believe that onions are one of the crops that need continuous care.
As for irrigation onions do not need large amounts of water but at the same time the soil must be moderately moist That is irrigation should be regular but not abundant because the roots may rot if the soil remains saturated with water for long periods.
Finally a very important thing is fertilization Onions need soil rich in nutrients so it is important to use organic fertilizer such as compost to give them a strong boost to grow Good fertilization makes the onions bigger and better in taste.
I am very excited to see the results and I think that farming is an enjoyable experience full of lessons Every time you plant something new you learn more and feel pleasure when you see your efforts turning into something real.
